Setting up a forum

Post

Don't worry, it is not another F1 forum :)

Before I get an answer from Tomba (he's away) perhaps someone else could give me a hint what is the simplest way to set up a forum, more precisely, which program should I use?

Is there some patch or downloadable upgrade for XP Front Page (2002) which I'm currently using? I'm looking for some editor that would enable me to edit forum just as I edit my site in Front Page (change colors, fonts, insert pics, hyperlinks and preview it easily).

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Manchild - I just found this yesterday - something called Wordpress. Here is a group of sample sites that use it. I don't have any actual experience - but it looked interesting - so I bookmarked it - perhaps it may be of use.

Most popular type of forum is the one used on f1technical.

it's phpBB forum which requires mySQL and php4 to be run.

Installation is pretty easy, as well as administration and maintaince is.

good luck :)

Thank you all, I got it now.

I've uploaded php bb to test location and now I need to install it.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to fill in these fields. If url of my space is for example http://manchild.testing.com and if my database url is http://manchild.testing.com/db/db2.php than what should I type in those fields?

Again, I thank you all in advance.

what type of db server is it? mysql, postgresql or sqlite? Very likely you'll need to enter server URI, username, password, db name.

phpBB is great as they update frequently. Avoid the old ones (phpnuke, ultimatebb, etc) and may I suggest an alternative:

Hey, not to hijack MC's post, but I have been asked to setup a BB based guitar forum from the ashes of one that is completely fouled with pornspam. Any ideas on how to eliminate spam? I never see it here, but the other site runs about 30-40 spams a day. I want to keep as much of the original as I can, member lists and old posts (selected).

Thanks.

I think you can have some sort of email confirmation system that scares off spammers

It would be an anti-Ferrari forum. Just kidding, just kidding!

I know how to make a website (more-less) but I have no experience with setting up a forum and administrating one so I'd like to learn to do that. I mean, there are servers that give you free space and already installed forum but I'd like to learn how to do it myself which apparently isn't that easy since database stuff seams complicated  So, I have no specific forum in mind, only learning

to keep spam down dont automaticly give out user names or allow annonamouse posting.

phpbb is pretty decent but as with all popular programs the spammers are aware of it and have exploits to try, it is however well supported so ...

removing the forum logo or any other referance to tthe version or type of forums prevent web crawlers finding its a forum to easyly

hours of fun and frustration in a forum, but i think you knew that

If you haven't formed up a forum;
For phpBB
1.Your host should support PHP.
2.Your host should support Mysql.
3.You need a quick and pratic ftp client (Cuteftp is my advice)
4.You need your account infos got prepared. (For ex. Run php, name and pass of mysql database, the certain place of the forum on host, then the others are simple.

If you are sure to continue i can explain on a an image ?

Thanks for the answers. I'm in no rush so please take your time. I'd appreciate explanation on an image but when you're really free from work.

Thanks again.
