The next challenge is the start. There is opportunity. If Verstappen can get in front of Antonelli off the line, there is real opportunity to control the race with Hadjar in P5 preventing Antonelli from stopping.

I wonder if the austria upgrade package will include an improvement to the kerb riding
No team sets out to make a car that can’t ride the kerbs. This all flows from the weight - a higher weight means you need to run stiffer to provide the same aero platform stability as cars that are lighter. A lighter car at Austria will allow them to run more compliant and still maintain the same stable platform.

It's about aero map more than weight imo. And lack of vehicle dynamics correlation (which they alrdy demonstrated in the ground effect era)

I dunno. The odds of a position change at the front at Monaco is extremely low. The run is too short and there isn't enough space to pull a move off. Max hasn’t had the best time at starts this season either and both him and Kimi will be looking behind at the Ferraris for the threat. Barring a major issue I expect they’ll both try and block off the Ferraris and look to the pitstops as the real chance to change the lead.

I know the situation is a bit different now, but when was the last time the one starting 1st lost the lead at the start in Monaco? Back in the 90's?

edit: apparently 2002, Coulthard vs Montoya.

On a normal race start there shouldn't be any position changes but the Mercs have a lottery launch system and when it's bad, it's very bad. Enough to drop a position IF Ver doesn't also have a bad start.

Mercedes did change Kimi's clutch for Canada but I agree with what you're saying.

I'm just happy if Max doesn't lose any position at the start given this season's history.
Then he can take the lead with a good old overcut that always seem to work in Monaco. :)

Merc will never pit as long as Hadjar is in the pit window so it's possible to put them in a corner.
