Many poor people are in that country exactly because people like this guy exploit them using everything from caste system across politics and crime to pure tyranny. They are 21st century feudals.

25% of population in India lives BELOW level of poverty. This means that almost whole of India population is poor. In society where average salary isn't enough to provide decent life billionaires are not made thanks to hard work but because of dirty work. Russian billionaires, East European billionaires, Indian billionaires etc.

Wealth acquired legitimately? - No, not in a starving country. They are rich because they control the system, the government. Since they are the judge and the jury, whole country salves to them and their enrichment. Law works only one way and never checks the legality and origins of their profit - because they are the law. Politicians are just small fires sucking up to them in order to get pieces of bread during their mandate by returning favors after elections. That's how system in such countries works.

If you think that he worked for a dollar a day than bought one apple and shined it, sold it for two... and done it billion times to become a billionaire well, what can I say...continue believing.

...

What I'm basically objecting is entrance of dirty money in F1. Billion of people in India finance richness of these guys because they are forced to do so. Instead of working for several hundred dollars per month they work for few dollars while the difference goes in pockets of these modern feudals.

If he can be as rich as a person having same business in UK or USA than why can't his workers be paid the same? How come? Same profit, same luxury, same wealth and workers treated like medieval peasants - given only what their bosses think is enough to make them functional enough to be able to work and nothing more.

Dying before reaching a pension is a must. Paying someone after he aged and stopped bringing profit! NO! Social security, medications, education? NO!

21st century slavery, that's what it is.

"Team India" owner is throwing a multi million dollar parties while millions of his countryman are starving or dying without medications. Really patriotic indeed. "Team selfish prick" is what he should call it.

For 80.000.000 he could have opened several factories in India and give jobs to thousands of his countryman while still making profit. The money he blew on Spyker purchase is just a thing for his personal pleasure and nothing more.

Well its not looked good at Spyker since the sale from Jordan. Midland got it for almost 2 years, then Spyker got it for about a year, now it goes back to Midland man and the Indian guy, forgive my not knowing of his name. It'l be a "new" team but I dont see the team getting any better racing wise.

I dont know whether to say you are blind, naive, socialist, idealist or just plain bigotted. Had he been an unknown Western billionaire, you will not question the legitimacy of his wealth. We are talking about one man but you start a lecture on what ails india, its cast system etc etc etc. And then tell us that due to all of this he cannot have acquired his wealth legitimately, assuming of course he made his wealth in that country (though whether he did or not is irrelevant other than the fact what you said suggests you did not consider this possibility).
If you think that he worked for a dollar a day than bought one apple and shined it, sold it for two... and done it billion times to become a billionaire well, what can I say...continue believing.
Do you really think before you write? Are you really this blinkered? What planet do you live on manchild?

And before you tell us you are speak for the downtrodden or for equality, justice etc etc, you either know everything (and I mean facts) there is to know about this man and exactly how he got his wealth or I am sorry but you truly are bigotted.

There simply isn't a honest way to become rich in a poor country unless you win on lottery or inherit money from abroad. If your salary isn't enough to provide decent life for your family than you can't put money aside to start a small business to become big business in a honest way. Also, I'm not the one with a slightest bit of respect for any blue blooded family whose wealth origins from feudalism.

Perfect example how it works - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viktor_Chernomyrdin

You could call me social-technocrat (to me communism, fascism and raw democracy are essentially the thing).

Once again, a formula one thread is polluted by the expression of pollitical divergences between members.
However, if there is some kind of a fuss this time, it's more the responsability of indian busynessman talking about a "team India" than the foum members legitimally commenting about it.

Formula one is the only sport I like on this world (well, all motorsports actually). Those are the only sports really proposing a fight between random competitors, and not a "diplomatic way" of making a war between nations.

In almost every internationnal sports, you see fanatics waving the flag of their country, which means that, while they're officially supporting a sportsman or a team (football club for instance), they're actually supporting a nation against one another! That lead most of sports to be hypocrit versions of nationalism, in my opinion.

So, as Scuderia_russ said, why doesn't Mr. Mallya go to A1GP, which is the motorsport created for this kind of people...

I'm tired of Aguri's "all japanese" ambitions, of Thiessen's germanisation of the BMW sauber team,of people disputing on whatever flag should welcome a Mc Laren win, of journalists wanting a french driver to Renault, etc... People involved in F1 should start by respecting it's spirit, Grand Prix racing originally meant to race in the way of the gentleman, without political interferences.

Then came Mosley...

Actually manchild is right in a way it tough here , specially the education and stuff is not up to the mark, except for in the IITs .And about the cast issues, yeah that crap is still happening . Lots of poor people , m sure only 2 % of the indian population knows about F1 and motorsports . We have ideas but no infrastructure and management, well its all improving drastically .

vyselegend, hell yeah!
F1 should be "un-nationalitized".
For example, its the only thing that can make me love someone from Brazil (and I say that for Senna, not Massa, uh!)

They should also give a chance to drivers cause of talent, not nationalities!

Back to the Spyker buy out.

Mr. Vijay Mallya owns Kingfisher Airlines, and the team he recently bought out (Spyker) has Etihad Airways as one of the main title sponsors. Will this bring on a conflict of interests between Spyker and Mr. Mallya? Does anyone know how many years the contract between Spyker and Etihad will be for :?:

Kingfisher is a sponsor for Toyota as well.

And I don't know if we all know this, but Mr. Mallya only bought out the Spyker Formula 1 team, not Spyker Cars N.V. Thank goodness.

Owner will definitely get priority. Other contract will be cancelled. Most likely they may continue as is 'til end of this season & run new sponsors & livery in '08.

We're all really speculating about this buyout. There hasn't been any official annoncement from the team about it's sale or new owner(s). I don't think we may know 'til end of Sept. Until then the team is still Spyker & business as usual.

GREAT POST!!!

Very true. I've been to India with a friend, and while his family wasn't super rich, they were definitely the mos wealthy in the town. The police just stop you for no reason and bother you until you pay them money. That didn't happen to us though. The local police were on this family's leash. You can pay off ANYONE in positions of power in third world countries, and that's why Mallya will be perpetually wealthy and perpetually in power.

mcdenife, the difference with Western billionaires is HUGE. It is so much harder to take advantage of essentially slave labor here. You can't work children. You can't work people 14 hours a day. You can't work them 7 days a week. You can't pay them less than $7 an hour. You can't deny them social security. You can't discriminate when hiring. You can't buy off the police. Political donations are limited. The list goes no forever, really.

Look at Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison or any of the other super rich here. They ALL started out as normal people who took a great business idea and turned it into a corporation.

I highly doubt he started from nothing and ethically worked his way up, because that just doesn't happen there. There's no such thing as jobs where you make enough to live and enough to save up for a business startup, mainly because of people like him! It's so true, because the minute even the poorest Indians make it to the United States, they're hard work turns into INSTANT success.

Even if he did build his wealthy up from scratch, I doubt it was without taking advantage of his countrymen in a manner which is totally banned here in the USA.
