Mercedes W12

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Holes covered before but now open. Special ducts channelling air. Something to do with the gearbox case. Won't be easy to copy. It's now clear what Merc have spent tokens on.....

Can anybody show me what on earth people are on about? I'm looking at before and after pictures and can see nothing along the lines of things now open or token spend? :?

it seems clear that the Mercedes technicians have managed to open up a flow that is probably fed by channels dug into the bottom at the sides of the transmission
Sorry but I really can't see what they're claiming. We saw this diffuser profile in testing. It just looks like the make up of the titanium inserts they use for the little vortex generators. It seems a big leap to claim it's fed by channels from the gearbox casing.

(You can see the metal insert they use for the vortex generators on most cars, for example the RB from today: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EzGNj2GXMAQM2pw?format=jpg and old image https://i.imgur.com/njuRi6h.jpeg)
They're just making stuff up. What they are referring to is the area where the top floor dips to the reference plane. Has been done for years now.

That's just camera angle and light, there's no difference structurally. Is that really what is being talked about?

Idk if it’s entirely new or a modified of the existing one but the strakes are different, just no holes as others are claiming....

There was a new specification of diffuser with modified strakes. No confirmed changes on the floor.

Some pictures of Bottas' crashed Mercedes. Not much, but showing a better view of the cape under the nose and radiator in the sidepod.

Now I was skeptic of some saying that Merc's running more rake. But looking at some footage, I'm starting to notice some higher rake than usual!

Also I've noticed these fins behind the halo. I don't know if they were on Bahrain.

Those fins have been there since testing, I think.

Can't really tell from that photo as the angled cut-away" section of the floor on this year's car can give the illusion there is more rake. Also, with the car moving and shifting its weight around it's never completely clear.

Look at the front wing and diffuser strakes... I believe it's either the 2019 car, or some sort of mule abomination...
