Marko talking as if he would have let Key go for free had Mclaren not gone public lol. Marko says Key is on holiday and will not be allowed to work further on 2019 car to protect their ip then Key is basically useless to them.

Mclaren would definitely have consulted with their lawyers before putting out a cleverly worded tweet without date or details. Good luck to Toro Rosso to try keeping Key on a holiday while paying his wages for the remainder of his contract. Albert Fabrega says there is clause at the end of 2018 season.

Mclaren know they have a much stronger position negotiation wise. They know they will get their man sooner ot later but one thing is for sure they have made sure Key will not be working on Toro Rosso's next year's car with this announcement.

This is just Marko/RB up to their usual mischief. Cant think of any time anyone in the paddock has had straightforward dealings with them (think Dan Fallows/McLaren 2 years ago). this is also relatively standard procedure when a big talent moves on.
Doesn't bode well then, cause Dan Fallows is still with Red Bull...
McLaren got Prodromou quickly. It was quid pro quo.

So what'll he do, lock him up in the RB Basement? He's just talking, as he always does.

Mclaren aint gonna get anywhere near the top 3 team till 2020. People are forgetting that this year is a one off in terms of budget, the Qataris have reluctantly backed the team with their cash and Zak was supposed to get sponsorship money not a wearable brand that no one knows of. Next year they will have for the first time in their history budget constraints and thats the chess move here. Key will give them a car to get to tip of midfield with the budget thats all. Dont think anyone is saying Key will now turn this team to top teir. Hell no. Just midfield top.
No, They have budget contraints now....

They got Prodromou quickly because Mclaren didn't pursue legal actions on Dan Fallows, he had a valid contract with Mclaren but stayed with Red Bull, after they turned his head. They gave him Prodromou's position, head of aero.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Key is looking for a step up. He is looking to be a technical director at a top team. Mclaren may not be a top team in terms of current on track performance but clearly they have much higher budget, infrastructure and added bonus of being a British team. Red Bull have made it clear that they will let Key rot and will not let him work any further with them so there is no question of turning his head. Key was waiting for promotion to Red Bull as a TD for a long time and does not want to wait any further and hence the move

Key can leave at the end of the year from Toro Rosso, there is a clause in the contract.

Really odd time for your TD to be on Vacation. Don't you think?

FIA have a contracts recognition board, but I do not know which employees are covered by it.

A clause can mean a lot.

I would have thought during the shut down. But then, maybe he has longer than that to take.

Not when they've already been in talks about contracting him, no, not odd at all, in fact you'd expect him to be whilst talks are completed.

You have a source for that? It's the first I've reaf that Mclaren's backers are suddenly reducing their budget. Don't forget, these numbers are peanuts to them....
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️
