According to the team stream, none of the drivers were able to get a clean lap on the soft tire. Carlos was happy with the balance of the car and Andreas said that in terms of performance they are in the same level they have been in the last couple of races and he expects a strong result here. I think there is more pace in the car than what was shown yesterday.

Team said they lost half a second in the qualy laps due to mistakes. They seem to be confident of a good showing. They are thinking about trying to advance from Q2 with mediums.

If that’s true then we’d be only 3 tenths off Mercedes. I’d understand if the team goes for mediums in Q2. I think it’s a bit too optimistic to try to get to Q3 on Mediums, unless Renault and STR will try to do the same. But with the high tyre degradation that everyone is struggling with on this track, starting P11 on fresh mediums might actually be better than starting P7 on worn softs. I’m excited for qualifying tonight to see how all of this unfolds.

From the analysis on the F1 site, RP had the best race pace in the midfield. McLaren were behind Alfa Romeo, STR and Renault as well.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

I wouldn't take that seriously.

They did struggle substantially though. Sainz's medium run towards the end saw massive pace drop.

Not that he is doing a bad job or anything, he is still worth hie seat, just my expectations from early season have not come to fruit
It’s still practice and with drivers having to get comfortable to lack of the downforce at Mexico, probably taking it slow and building up... Wouldn’t be the first time this season that Norris starts slow in Practice and it’s on pace in Qualy.

I mean in general, not just this week. He is young enough to make a jump though I suppose.
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.

The second and third sectors are not bad, the first sector is terrible. I hope this is aimed at the race

FP3 was very good for the team... Great lap by Carlos... If he can do it in Qualy, they may make it on Mediums, which is probably the best strategy

Norris saved one more set of softs (and therefor has only one set of mediums left - Sainz has two of them), so it looks like they will split strategies - which makes probably sense. Sainz to try to make it on Mediums, Norris to start on Softs.

It will be interesting... The team has to be aggressive/creative every once in a while.

I think it was wrong to let Sainz qualify on softs. Let Norris take P7 on softs and put Sainz on the right tyre for the race. Sunday is when points are given. Not Saturday.

Even if Sainz would have missed Q3, the tyres would have given him a massive advantage. If not, you’d still have Norris up there..

I think I’m with you on that,

Norris might not be 7th. TRs are fast. We have to keep in mind that there is almost 50% chance of rain tomorrow...
