Little Wings

Post

Hi guys,

Anybody seen the one of the latest Ferrari test cars?, They have put a little wing under the main front wing (where the BAR have put the dip), its very odd![/img]

here is a picture

not sure how much downforce it will generate though?

The whole nose cone looks different I think. Its ugly....but this could be just experimental..to see the effect of dropping the centre section as low as possible before coming up with a proper centre-droop wing.It would be seriously fascinating to see how teams cope with new regs.I hope to see more!!!

agree with you..these have to be a experimental one..not a serious option ...
i think saubers and ferraris have another point in commun found it in going to radical or give the others a reason to talk about this year
i found this
http://www.f1racing.net/en/photolarge.p ... catID=1583

and this
http://www.f1racing.net/en/photolarge.p ... catID=1583

all above its just a joke to make a distration in the other teams. cause i dont think these new element will be usefull to gain speed or grip..and i think will be banned by FIA cause its like the same arrows does it before with a strange element in the front wing

any clue??

This was the first outing of the F2004M, the car that will race in the first 2005 races. Thinking Ferrari is only "experimenting" in end January isn't very correct IMO. This is the result of wind tunnel development. It should allow more efficient almost-horizontal profiles, while allowing a good downforce effect in result of the proximity of the centre of the wing to the grond.

Now, it lacks a new radical development: someone combining Ferrari-like central add-on wings with 2 plane Sauber-like outside wings!!!!! :D It should look like a World War I plane!!!!

well it looks like it is quite fast though ;)

I don't really think it's ugly, apart from the fat nose now, can't see what they are doing there, kind of a strange bulge on the underside of the nosetip. Anyway the wing itself is quite nice, 3 thin planes, very detailed ends, ... looks a lot better to me than the giant Renault front wing :)

AFAK, that car is F2003GA. They have modified it to the 2005 rules. Scumacher is driving it, so that would make it the F2004M, though I cant see why they would use the GA rather than the F2004. Maybe F2003GA was better adjusted to the new rules, who knows.
As for the wing, I find it interesting they've moved to three main elements, instead of the two they found sufficient last season. More drag, but I guess they need all the downforce they can get with the new rules, thus the strange mini-winglet under the actual wing too.
In the rearwing they have copied the Toyota rear wing endplate slits. The first team to copy them. :P

I'm too lazy, but somebody could dig up a picture of the F2003GA and see if that wing (not including the winglet) is one of the originals, or if they have made a new one for the rules. It would be extremely strange if they found nothing to improve in a two year old wing. :?

Maybe I just don't quite understand. But if the front wing has to be X cm off the ground, how can this little wing on the ferrari, as well as the scoops on the BAR and renault be legal? Could someone help me before my brain frazzles?

The wing can be as low as you want in the middle of the car, and IIRC any part of the wing more than 250mm from the car center line has to be at a certain height. I'm sure somebody will quote me with the correct numbers, with the satisfaction of proving me "wrong" 8)

I think rulez say that the wing must be in one layer(there musn't be a wing under an another) than why Ferrari put this ugly litle thingy UNDER the wing??

The car is a modified F2004, not an F2003 mod

This is confirmed by the size/shape of the sidepod air intakes, head cowling, exhaust outlets (they are not vertical), shape of engine cover etc etc etc etc etc etc

As I can see the little wings have a very short chord. And the top little wing seem to touch the bottom of the full-span wing. How can such as short chord wing produce a meaningful amount of downforce? or is it there just to condition the airflow by accelerating the air that pass under the main wing and hence increase the downforce of the main wing?

other than the obvious addition, Ferrari also seemed to have increase the surface area of all 3 element of their front wing.....compare to what I remember seeing last year......
