It's fast is what it is. How much does the number matter?

Embrace the metric system. 'Because its what I'm used too' isn't really a good enough reason to keep imperial. Happy to see reasons why metric should be abandoned though.

I think that was a Freduan slip, do you not realise the Scots Welsh & Irish watch the same broadcasts?

Anyway, back to OP. Imperial relates to the human scale. Most of the world started off with some form of similar measurement and it goes back to Byzantium. As it happens most of the world drove on the left too.

At least the Byzantines had consistent base of 12 whereas imperial is a jumble of base 10 arab numerals with a base 12 mathematics for distance, base 16 for weights, and a mix of base 8 and 20 for liquids - wtf?

Having the same base for mathematics and numerals makes much more sense. It was easier to change to metric than to reinvent Arab numerals.

Anyway UK engineering has used metric for 40-50 years, so use of metric in a technical sport is entirely consistent for UK viewers.

ps - Was it an problem to have metres in the London Olympics? Would you rather Bolt ran 100 yards m and Farah ran 5 miles?

pps - I recall the European conversion to metric took place due to the French revolution as part of an ideology for rational governance. Then Napoleon conquered Europe and the rest is history.

ppps - the "whole of England" only uses imperial for mph. Everything else is metric from buying apples to the national debt. Same too for the rest of the UK.

Let me redesign you rsentence so its more readable and user friendly;

Why does the whole on England use it for then? should read

"Why does England use the Imperial system?"

See one sentence gets the meaning across in a simple manner that understood by a broader audience thanks to a known standard.

See what I Did there?

Thats why Metric exists and is used in countries who actually manufacture goods, employing people instead of paying them not to...

It would appear that "the whole of England" has worse debt.... http://www.economist.com/blogs/graphicd ... y-chart-10

... and for comparing individual countries :arrow: http://www.economist.com/content/global_debt_clock

It would also appear that this thread is incapable of rational discourse.
