2D to 3D

Post

Can anyone suggest me some simple (if possible downloadable) program that I could use to convert several 2D drawings into one 3D object that can be rendered? In general what is the easiest way to get 3D model from 2D drawing?

Thanks in advance!

Hey man, you'll have to be a bit more specific as to the details.

Do you have several DXF files and you want to create a solid 3D model ?

Are you running Windows? Linux ?

all that info will help !

Sorry for the lack of details

I'm on Win XP and I'd like to create solid 3D models by combining 2D drawings (front, rear, top, bottom, sideways view). Is there a possibility to get let’s say front left view 3D model by combining only front, left sideways and top view?

I realy need something simple, nothing fancy or pro...

Thanks again!

I remember Unigraphics giving you the ability to make technical drawings (w/ dimensions), but I forgot if you can translate them to 3D and vice versa (was never good at it anyway).

In the August edition of 3DWorld magazine ( http://www.3dworldmag.com ) there is a fully functional trial version of ImageModeler4 on CD. I've never used the programme, but it seems to do what you want.

You can see it here:

Also, in the downloads section:

Hi! I am new to this forum as of today, and found this post very interesting. I kind of have the same problem as manchild, only the other way around!

You see, I do my 3d designs with a very competent piece of software, called Rhinoceros, that I really can reccomend. My problem (and my motivation for registering in this forum) was finding 2d sketches/blueprints/hires photos etc of F1 cars to model from.

I have never tried modelling cars nor formula one cars, but that is what I aim for. I am looking for blueprints and hires photos of Ferraris in the range F2002 to F2005. I would really appreciate any help I can get here!

To further wet your apetite for the software I reccomend, please have a look at the following links:

I think Solidworks or pro/engineer will be helpfull for you but solidworks is the easiest one

I dont know what manchild is going to use the software for, but according to his own words, it should be: simple , nothing fancy or pro.

I dont think Solidworks and Pro/engineer would fit the category simple. Neither is it downloadable, and costs 4 figure dollars (hence pro). Rhinoceros is easy to learn, yet extremely powerful and downloadable (free 25 saves in the evaluation version). Just my 2 cents.

I download Rhino It's look like maya and 3D studio and i don't think it will be usefull in case of mechcanical modeling.and if u have 3 views for any design u will be able to use solidworks to do it easley :D

I do 3d modeling for games. I use a combination of Zmodeler v1.07 & v2(both free) and they are reasonably easy to use. I also use Blender3D v2.37 (free as well). Each of these programs have their strengths. They all save to some common formats. 3DS, DXF, etc. You can load the 2D drawings into their backgrounds for the modeling.

http://www.zmodeler2.com
and
http://www.blender.org (having trouble with this link at the moment but should be the correct one)
http://www.elysiun.com (support community for Blender)

If you want to do mechanical modeling there's FREECAD (free) or CADSM ($24 usd) You can create you models in Zmodeler or Blender3D for use in CADSM. It's a kind of a tough program to learn though.

my 2 cents.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that only Blender3D does renders. Zmodeler is strickly a modeler.

I think this is getting somewhere near the arguments of kids telling each other that my dad is stronger than yours etc. But I will try to restrain myself and keep it as objective as possible. I am currently working with product design/and development as a r&d manager.

I have used Inventor and tried SolidWorks, but the last 3 years I mostly have used Rhinoceros for all design and rendering. No, it is not a parametric modeller, but it is a very competent NURBS modeller with Cad/Cam capabilities, at a price other modellers with similar capabilities can only wish for.

To claim that Rhino is a mockup of Maya and 3ds is not a very accurate statement, to say the least, espescially so if you dont have any experiance with it. Please have a look at what is actually made from Rhinoceros, it is not a toy.

And have a look at the userlist, I would say they are pretty serious, wouldnt you?

Actually I didn't try say that SW or Pro/engineer are better because i use them or it was just because i used them and i know that spically SW is easy when u have 3 view and u want to convert them directly to 3d model
