I can't agree to that, only insiders know how much is Adrian Newey's actual ideas, and how much are his teams' ideas. Though for sure he know how to manage his people.

It looks to me, on the FW11B, like the exhausts come up from the sidepods and point forward. Am I seeing this correctly? If so, why would they want them pointing forwards? Surely trying to blow your exhaust into a 200km/h headwind would have some ill effects.

edit: sorry for being a bit off topic

Those are air intakes I believe, here's a nice cut away I found on google. Looks like one is for a turbo, and the other is for the engine. There doesn't appear to be an intake above the drivers head.

then here's a real life picture, with the engine cover off

I think the exhaust exits are next to the rear tyres

edit:
Anyway, on the greatest designer thing, I don't think you can name a sole designer as the greatest. Greatest of their era, in a lot of cases you can. But how can I compare the 1st and 2nd place people in the link, the technology they dealed with and what they had to design was entirely different. I would put Newey as the best of his time, just not all time best.

How about Gordon Murray and John Barnard? Rory Byrne also. Colin Chapman was a true genius. Newey may be the most successful one, but I don't think he is the greatest, actually.

Yeah, the list certainly looks strange without Barnard. I guess the list should be called the most successful F1 designer, and for that I would agree with the top-three, but greatest is so oblique. I would call Barnard, Postlethwaite and Chapman as the greatest designers as they shaped F1 the way we see it, whereas Byrne and Newey work within the framework of the rules. And of course we can argue ad nauseum as to what would be Byrne and Newey capable of had they appeared at the time of less restrictive rules.

Nice to see Vittorio Jano on the list. He is one of the most prolific racing car designer all-time.

I think with Colin Chapman we must not forget Len Terry, Maurice Philippe or Peter Wright among many others co-designers.

I don't think I would have put Gerard Ducarouge on that list but for sure Gordon Murray is missing.

And Tony Southgate too : he is the only race car designer to have won the Indy 500, the Monaco GP and the 24h of Le Mans. His book "From Drawing Board to Chequered Flag" about his career is a must read for both 1970's F-1 and 1980's sportscar fans. Well written with very original personal contribution. Good technical content.

Newey legacy in F1 has lasted for almost 20 years now, I am not sure if there are any other F1 designers that could actually beat that.

1992 – Williams FW14B
1993 – Williams FW15C
1994 – Williams FW16
1996 – Williams FW18
1997 – Williams FW19
1998 – McLaren MP4/13
2010 – Red Bull RB6
2011 – Red Bull RB7
2012 – Red Bull RB8

I have my reasons to agree that its perfectly fine that Barnard is not on that list...
