2013 PIRELLI Wheels will be asymmetric

Post

Just hear in spanish radio Cadena Cope. Sorry this is google-translated
Carlos Miquel | Cadena COPE
Miรฉrcoles 23/01/2013
As has front wheels Carlos Miquel F-1 of this World side will be different depending on which are mounted, causing a greater and more spectacle wear.

Turn of the Screw. Pirelli has decided to force the machine to its compounds in 2013. The Party ahead of the 12 characteristics with an outstanding above the others, the asymmetry of the tires. That is, the side will be different from those of the left right.

And this affects wear. Was so prevents teams exchanged the one side with the other during the weekend and can alleviate and excessive punishment of two of the wheels, as in tracks like China or Barcelona. And also affects the aerodynamics of the cars, with cars that have had to be retouched in recent days by the new construction of the Pirelli. The new tires will be presented today at noon in Milan.

In addition, the spectacle, the compounds are softened. The super soft, soft and medium will be even more aggressive than last year. A grade soft. And, to confuse the teams, the harder it will be significantly harder. The difference between a soft and a hard, for example, can generate different race strategies.

Finally, Japan's Kamui Kobayashi will be introduced today as the Italian multinational tester 2013. The possibility exists that Alguersuari they may join later. And there will be changes between engineers seats designated for each team. The Spanish Manuel Munoz, who was at Ferrari, is now the man of Pirelli in Lotus Renault, with Kimi Raikkonen. And the Italian team will be his replacement Canadian engineer who advised in 2012 Sauber Kobayashi and Sergio Perez.

Fronts that are a different size than rears, yes. But I highly doubt that left side tires will be different size than right side tires. That's just stupid and dangerous on non oval tracks.

Is this just compounds or the actual shape and size of the tyres?

If it is size, that's a whole new level of weird...

I think they mean for the slicks the inboard ply is different from the ourboard ply. So you can't can't switch them around any more.

Yep. Almost certain this has to do with directionality, not dimensions.

I had never thought that team would change the left and right tyres in a race weekend (now I know and feel stupid :wtf: ) , this was actually an excellent strategy for the teams to change the direction from qualy to race .

Now the teams have to worry more wear in qualy and I guess now no one will compete for Q3  because excessive wear on a side of tyres will massively reduce the pace for the race .

Anyways what will be the wear difference if the right and left tyres are changed (wrt vice versa) ? Also why will Pirelli make the 2011 mistake of making the hard compound more hard and the softs more stop . Won't this lead to more 1 stop race i.e. people will pit after 10 laps then go on the hard for the race distance .

Today is the Pirelli press conference so we'll see what they have in store for this year. Also, Kobayashi is tipped to be the 2013 Pirelli test driver.
"...and there, very much in flames, is Jacques Laffite's Ligier. That's obviously a turbo blaze, and of course, Laffite will be able to see that conflagration in his mirrors... he is coolly parking the car somewhere safe." Murray Walker, San Marino 1985

Depends how much slower the hards are.

I'm pretty sure F1 tyres are already directional.

Yeah I'm sure they don't mean they'll be dimensionally asymmetric, that would change their geometries and all sorts of things that are already 'designed-in'.

When tyre makers say asymmetric, what they're essentially saying is the force/slip-angle graph is not symmetrical, not the tyre itself, which on road cars is achieved by tread pattern, but I guess in this case will be purely down to construction.

Think all their doing is the same as what's been done in MotoGP for a while, where if the track their racing at is heavy on right hand corners, the compound on the right edge contact patch of the tire is different to the one on the left.

So all they'll do is for a set of tires is make the ones with the higher wear rate out of a slightly different compound, so again a track heavy on right hand corners, the side of the car which takes the most load will have tires made out of a more durable compound.

Good to see the premier technological race series catching up with production car technology.

The reason Pirelli are doing this is easy. Marketing. Nowt wrong with that, since the series is just one big billboard.

Amazes me that this is big news.

Well technically its the only real "news" as most of the rubbish coming out of tabloids or the press are hearsay/rumours.

Pirelli are exploiting that void where Formula 1 news is quieter than usual.

From a marketing point of view, its smart.
If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.
