Engine maps - insight from ex-F1 engineer

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Engine maps - insight from ex-F1 engineer

Post

Hi all, more knowledge sharing, this time it's about F1 engine maps. The words inside the article come directly from Maurizio Bollini - ex F1 engine engineer, who was working with Michael Schumacher back in Ferrari.

Here' the link to the article, I hope you will like it. At the same time, I'm aware that certain parts of the information is already known to some of you, but I wanted a more accessible format for the not-so-technical as well.

Comments are welcome.

How applicable is this in the era of the spec-ECU? Just curious...

It is likely what they do now, but the regulations limit the driver to two selectable pedal-torque demand maps. One for wet tires and one for dry.

True. But you can still have several power unit maps, and one of these could eg. completely switch of the MGU-K, another could bring torque of MGU-K early (already at low torque demand) etc. etc.
The power unit maps have to deliver torque according to torque demand, but they have not necessarily to deliver the full possible torque even if the ES is fully charged.

Right, there certainly will be multiple selections for power unit maps. They will have to in order to conserve fuel at times I bet.
