Sponsorship Livery

Post

I was wondering what people would think about having a teams with different liveries. For example McLaren could run a Johnnie Walker Black Label and Green Label car or a Coca Cola and 7-up. This would give the company the chance to maximise the exposure for their products.

It would also be possible to have two cars from the same team sponsored by different companies. Potentially lower the cost of sponsorship as the advert may not appear on both cars. This could have the advantage of attracting companies that believe F1 is too expensive at the moment for their product.

I think BAR tried to do this some time ago with 555 & Mild Seven, but it was not allowed for some reason (I think there is a FIA regulation against it). But when people are saying it is hard to attract sponsors, maybe the regulations should be readdressed??

Well you know the FIA, they won't budge on anything unless somebody is killed.

This was forbidden before. Remember when BAR wanted to have cars painted differently?

That was a compromise BAR had to make even though they wanted one car painted in 555 and another in Lucky Strike colors.

Pretty cool way of doing it though. A zip revealing carbon fibre would look good.

Althought I don't think much of the practice of constantly changing the paint schemes (as in NASCAR), I would like to see a sponsor allowed just one car, and teams not allowed both cars to be sponsored by the same company. Why? Be because it would forever eliminate team orders, each driver and car would have to fend for themselves on the track. For exampler, let's go back to the infamous farce in Austria, where Barrichello openly and brazenly pulled over (from a solid win) to allow Shu to pass and get a win. If Barrichello's car had been in a sponsorship arraingement different than Shu, the financial consequences (and massive lawsuits) would have followed.
So, having two cars identical in sponsorship, there will always be (hidden) team orders, because the sponsor is in a no-lose scenario if one car gives way under team orders.

Different liveries on each of the race cars is illegal...though the test car (Friday car  ) is (or at least was last year) free to change livery at all races.

The same company having 2 diferent logos on the car is legal...more or less like BAR has done in the last couple of years...they've had the 555 and Lucky Strike logos on the car....what they did in 99 with 2 diferent liveries (one for each car) is what's illegal.

Notice that the FIA doesn't have anything to do with this...FOM is the management/sponsorship/financial regulator.
