2014 Car Appearance.

Post

I have had a quick look but couldnt find anything already on here, so sorry in advance if I missed it.

Next year we are going to see alot of changes to the cars, but how much different visually are the cars going to be ? with people talking about less importance of Aero (But Aero is always KING) and more importance on the drive chain. Or is this just down to the new engines demanding alot more work than the cars themselves ? Are we going to have visual changes like 97-98 or 08-09 ?

The visual changes won't be that big. I think you have to be an enthusiast to notice them. So not as big as back in 09.

The front wing will be 150mm narrower. But it won't be noticable. The most noticable will be the lower noses.

Sidepods could also turn out to be bulkier. With the new engines the cooling requirements is unknown right now. So my bet is they will be bulkier.

There is alot of minor changes. They won't be that noticable to the average fan.

You will probably see the central exhaust pipe because it will stick out at the back. And enthusiasts will notice that there will not be a beam wind and that the rear wings will be shallower. But for the uneducated masses the cars will look similar at the rear. I agree that the low nose will be the main give away.
Formula One's fundamental ethos is about success coming to those with the most ingenious engineering and best .............................. organization, not to those with the biggest budget. (Dave Richards)

you will also probably see rear wing support pillars due the beam wing being removed. That or perhaps the rear wing endplates completely extended to the floor, if they can find the necessary rigidity.

Probably we'll also see innovative winglets in the 150mm free area underneath the rear wing.

Sidepods will change considerably. On the one hand they loose the bulkier coanda/ramp solutions, on the other hand the new ERS systems and the intercooler will ask more space. We might have a bulky middle, ending in a very narrow back.

I agree with you on the sidepods. As i wrote in another thread i believe that we will see some extreme coke bottle shapes.

The possibility also exists that teams will look at Sauber. It requires new radiator technology, and sauber worked on it for almost 2 years, but it is possible. It could compensate for the extra space needed. Sauber anyway has a head start on this.
