Engine characteristics

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Engine characteristics

Post

Ok one thing. This topic is about the current breed of F1 engines, the V8's. as far as general consensus goes the Mercedes engine is said to have more top end power with an, on average, higher fuel burn (fuel map depending of course). The Renault engine is said to have less power on the top end but have a little bit more lower down with a smoother power curve and also to be slightly better on fuel.

Correct me if am wrong btw.

However I am slightly confused where the Ferrari and current Cosworth engine sit in the table compared to the other two. Can anybody enlighten me on this and if you can provide sources that would be much appreciated.

P.S. can we try to make sure this doesn't turn into a pissing contest!

I agree that the Merc is considered the best in terms of outright power engine power and KERS system, and would be the engine to have. I bet that's the one supplier Vijay Mallaya does delay payment to.....

Also agree that the Renault is a said to be a little better on fuel, and with creative engine mapping, the lower to mid range torque curve. I believe that the V8 Renault is a little peaky in its lower figure horsepower curve, and a touch critical on gearing. You could see in the last few years that the Red Bulls in particular struggled a little to carry a taller DRS optimised gear on longer straights in the race when the cars were heavy with fuel, as the engine was a bit rev critical. No doubt down a bit on the Merc in top end.

I believe the Ferrari might not have the peak power, but is very drivable, a hallmark from the Schumacher era, where he specifically modified a corner at Fiorano to purposely assess the drivability ( smooth torque delivery) of the Ferrari engines.

I believe the Cosworth would be a fair amount down on power, as the money isn't there to develop it. Back when Williams used them, they kept asking for top end power, while the Marrusia etc asked for more torque. I'm sure the Williams tie up added impetus to the program, but the quick jump to Renault engines says volumes unfortunately....
