Although Adrian Newey may relish a new challenge, the talented engineer decided to make the switch on the promise of a $10m per year Red Bull pay cheque. That's the news of a McLaren 'source', who told the respected Guardian newspaper that Ron Dennis' final offer stopped at around the $6m mark. "Ron Dennis and chief executive Martin Whitmarsh did not feel such an investment could be justified," the newspaper wrote. McLaren chairman Dennis, and 'F1 CEO' Whitmarsh, did not comment.

There are just a very small amount of engineers who can build a winning car, and Newey is one. Guys like that really are worth their weight in gold. And if you don't believe me, look at Willaims, who have not enjoyed championship success since Newey left.
So McLaren will have a competitive car next season, but after that, all bets are off.
I wouldn't be surprised if Ferrari get Kimi to sign with them in '07
