DC, the forgotten man

Post

While many focus their attention of front runners and big names like Shu, Kimi, and Fernando, we must never lose sight of the incredible job David Coulthard did in 2005. He appeared to be out of a ride after McLaren and he parted ways. But he got a ride in Red Bull for 2005, despite Red Bull's obvious strategy of promoting new, young drivers. For many, it was assumed that after 2005, DC would be out of Red Bull. But as we all witnessed, he brought a lot to Red Bull, and gave them good results, as well as the self confidence to believe in themselves. In fact, he did such a good job, they decided to keep him around for 2006. We shall never know how much his presence in Red Bull influenced their expansion into Toro Rossi, but I suspect it was a major factor. As a side note, he and Red Bull proved how messed up and incompetent the management structure was at Ford, when they took a car that had pathetic results, and turned it into a genuine racer.
And consider this .. what if McLaren had decided to keep him instead of Montoya? I'm a staunch supported of JPM, in fact I predict he will be a contender for the title. But Ron Dennis and his gang must have nightmares, because if they had kept DC, he most probably would have secured enough points to hand McLaren the Constructor's title.
David Coulthard, despite being in the twilight of your F1 career, you still get the job done, my hat's off to you.

I can't remember where I heard (or read) it from, but Red Bull told him that even when he finishes his career (wherever it may be) that he is, always, more than welcome to come back as a conslultant.

Also, I wonder how much did his presence with that team have to do with Newey's decision to switch teams?

I do have to belive that DC's contributions gave Red Bull respectability within the paddock. Not to take away from all the money and hard work from all within Red Bull, DC immediately put them on the map as serious contenders.

We must also remember that the RB1 is really Jaguar's creation, so it is also a credit to the the old crew of how well their car ran, pity Ford wanted to discontinue Jaguar's F1 persuits.

Yeah definately...i posted sumwhere (i think in the RB2 thread) about how the RB1 was really the R6...the fundamentals were Jaguar. And I also talked about how after last season's performance...would FORD have pulled the plug on Jag Rac's funding???

Hats off the DC, I've been a fan for years. You know, he is probably better off out of McLaren; now see the racer he is, rather than the odd flash appearing from behind the brilliance of Mika & Kimi.

I suspect that DC had A LOT to do with Newey moving across, and it won't just be on anything good DC may have said about RBR, I believe that Newey knows he has a good man in his car when he has DC in it.

By chance I have seen DC driving in the flesh twice this year. 1st was F1 testing at Silverstone, he looked clean, fast and accurate (more than you can say about some). 2nd time was the Race of Champions this year, DC fell down on his first laps every time - once he had lap one under his belt he was very quick (in fact I think I'm right in saying that DC held fastest lap overall at ROC this year). That age old DC problem of needing time to play himself into the car. I am wondering whether this year's qualifying rules might work well for him.

Indeed. I am chuffed for DC being a team leader again and he can be a real racer once he is settled in. He has bags of experience and I think RBR really respect him.
With the momentum that RBR currently has, I would wager on a poduim at least once this season. Especially if the front runners trip up. If they had switched to Bridgestones, they would be in a better position still.

I was lucky enough to attend Silverstone 2000, One of DC's best drives, until '05 where almost each race he deserved an award.
The new team has really motivated DC and with one A. Newey behind the latest RBR creation, this could be best season of his career, not in terms of results, but for sheer quality.

I dunno bout this season...right now the car looks too fragile...but Newey hopefully should be able to fix that given some time. the RB3 will be an all Newey car...now THAT will be a car to look out for!

You're right about the cars. RB3 in '07 will be the one to really watch. Lots of people say that DC will retire at the end of this year. With a Newey RB3 available, I would be very surprised!

Will DC get a driving contract post 2006 that's the crucial question!

A few factors will decide this one. Has Klien found some more pace (he certainly improved last year on his '04 performances), and who is available on the driver market (Schuey and Kimi could be floating around by then!)
