Steering Rack

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Steering Rack

Post

I was watching a old Top Gear show where they use the Renault R25 on there test track. He said the R25 is fitted with the steering rack from Monaco. I was just wondering if they use a different steering rack for each race?
Simon: Nils? You can close in now. Nils?
John McClane: [on the guard's phone] Attention! Attention! Nils is dead! I repeat, Nils is dead, ----head. So's his pal, and those four guys from the East German All-Stars, your boys at the bank? They're gonna be a little late.
Simon: [on the phone] John... in the back of the truck you're driving, there's $13 billon dollars worth in gold bullion. I wonder would a deal be out of the question?
John McClane: [on the phone] Yeah, I got a deal for you. Come out from that rock you're hiding under, and I'll drive this truck up your ass.

I've seen it too.

It’s because some circuits like Monaco have very sharp turns and it requires steering rack that enables greater steering angle of wheels than for example steering rack for Monza. It would be almost impossible to make a lap in Monaco with Monza steering rack because diameter of turns is so small.

Monaco and for example already mentioned Monza require unique (very different) suspension, steering, wings… and those elements are specially designed for each circuit.

IIRC it was an R24.

It was a dozen christmases at once for the Stig. :D Especially considering all he'd done (competitively) in F1 before was 20 meters!

I heard it was actually Heikki Kovalainen that drove the R 24 and not the Stig.

Here is my source

It appears that some rarer, privately owned cars may be driven by their owner, masquerading as the Stig. This was the case for the Maserati MC12, privately owned by Frank Mountain, a successful property developer; the car was at the time the only one in the country. Heikki Kovalainen (the Renault F1 test driver) admitted to driving the Renault R24 F1 car around the track in the 2004 series, clothed as the Stig.

Was that on the 'Best of Top Gear' last night? I missed it, would have liked to see it again.
