Well, since you'll probably design a Ferrari than I'd suggest 3D Studio Max

Just kidding, I'm not fammiliar with 3D modeling

What type of modelling are you planning to do?
If you want to just make a model for looking at, 3ds max is the best solution, with brasil as a render. Final render is a good renderer too.
For animation Maya is the best, but I found it's rendering possibilities are a little weak so I went with 3ds max.
For cad (and cdf) Solidworks is a good choice. A very good choice if you're a beginner. It's easy to get stuff started, and it has a lot of power once you become more accustomed with cad.

If you can be more specific about what you want I could give you more specific answers.

Solid works is a great program.
Pro Edition is maybe the best stuff as is mastercam.
alot really depends on what kind of work your going to do

For a real engineering model, you need to use a parametric based software, such as Catia, Pro-Engineer, I-DEAS, or solidworks/edge. All are very similar, but solidworks is the weakest although the easiest to use. If you intend to do FEA analysis i would not look at using solidworks as Cosmos is well.... not the best system. I have experiance in all the programs above, and my personal preference is EDS IDEAS although Pro-Eng is there or there abouts......

lol oh and i just like ferrari. i don't worship them. the one team i liked last year had to be red bull because for one their my favorite drink and it finally made david coulthard not be an asshole

well not really an asshole........just less ruined by ron dennis.....lively

Solidworks is a good choice for the private user in general. Catia, IDEAS and ProE are very expensive.
Solidworks would be a great tool to get to know CAD as much of it will carryover to CATIA V5 etc...
I've had 5 years of CATIA V4 experience but now been a project manager for 2 years and miss the CAD work terribly.
Formula One teams use CATIA or IDEAS.
Renault, McLaren and Toyota = CATIA
Williams, Honda and Red Bull = IDEAS?

Good luck and send us a few screen shots of your work if you like. :D

Well I'm an Aerospace Engineering Student, here in the UK. I use Solidworks, but thats REALLY only because thats what I use at University and it's easier to use the same software (Less confusing). Well..that and I've heard its quite good.

Well thanks alot for the help everybody. i should be startin all my engineering classes soon and everybody's advice on what program i should use. Currently i have solidworks 2004 and hoping to acquire CATIA V5 so i can begin to tinker around in that and design a race car.......and yes ManChild it will be red......Ferrari red not Marborolo red

Solidworks is a good stepping stone. I used UG before and had no idea how to use it. The "layering" bit really confused me.

I like the sound of that! I'm an amateur car builder myself! You might find this website helpful. There is alot of knowledge on there with regards chassis building using a variety of tecniques that you can do in your back yard! http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk You might regret not putting a 1000c.c. in though. The people on this site mainly build replica Lotus 7's but there are some people building mid engined stuff with their own fibreglass bodies as well as the odd single seater. There is a photo archive that most members have uploaded their pics to and alot of people have alot of knowledge on that site. (And it's all for free if you ask nicely)
I have been (very roughly) sketching single seater ideas for a car to use in hillclimb events here in England but I'm considering getting into Formula Vee now instead. Like the idea of circuit racing more, but I'm skint until my 7 is finished. What have you got in mind, spaceframe?

600cc racing cars are cool. I did Formula Student in 1999. Many a long night in the workshop. Handy that my girlfriend dumped me before my final year.
