Wheel rotating inside the tire ...

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Wheel rotating inside the tire ...

Post

just found a nice article, it said that the wheel rotating inside the tire due to traction & braking .... considering the higher torque in 2014, how can F1 engineers prevent it happen on the car? did they do the same trick..?

I know of quite some rally cars using this simle feat to allow running lower tyre pressures whilst still keeping the tyre in place.

It can happen on production cars as well, which causes out of balance complaints. usually it is because they put too much soap in the lube when fitting the tire.

Off-road vehicles use beadlocks, because tire pressures are often set too low (for better traction) to keep the wheels from spinning within them.

I'd think braking would be the test of tire slip in F1. If it can handle that, slip under acceleration probably wouldn't be an issue.

You can even slip a tire on a mountain bike with heavy braking (and cut a valve if you're running tubes).

Rim slip? Easy. Properly dimension the tire and wheel.. have the right surface finish.. mount the tires properly. Takes care of a lot of problems! The dimensioning thing isn't trivial on race tires in general.. where race wheels can be all over the place as far as adherence to anything T&RA might put out. You'd have to think at the F1 level they're smart enough about it to get enough bead seat compression.

As Greg alludes to it's really not at all uncommon on production cars, especially on wheels with a very polished surface finish.

Ultimately.. if you have a little bit of rim slip it's not the end of the world. If it's enough to make the rotating assembly noticeably out of balance - you've got an issue!

The wheel spinning at the tire bead is a problem for the rear tires on top fuel drag cars, especially since they use very low inflation pressures. These cars use wheels with bead locks to prevent tire slippage.

On our Safari cars just bond the tyre to the bead with polyurethane, lighter than beadlockers!

Even if they had higher torque at the wheels (which they don't, its just accessible at a broader rev band) the forces are still much higher during braking than acceleration.

Funny cars as well, and I believe the super stock too! Looking at slow-mo of starts is pure definition of automotive porn. :)
