Mercedes AMG GT

Post

With the SLS being retired, I have seen snaps of this GT AMG for a few months now.
Apparently smaller and lighter than the SLS, it will use the new 4.0 litre twin turbo V8. The starting price is circa £80k which is around 80K cheaper than the SLS making it a slightly more realistic proposition.
What is interesting is that this is the first time Mercedes have gone Porsche hunting. This is not a direct replacement and appears to have a different brief to the SLS. No gullwing doors with this either....
It will also be targeting a 1395 Kg kerb mass. And Venturi tunnels are rumoured.

I drove the SLS at Mercedes world a year ago, and while I loved the car and it's noise 2 things stood out. The size of it.....MASSIVE, and also the slow changes on upshift. It just was not intuitive.... I pray, the GT AMG gets a faster 'box as it could end up spoiling the experience somewhat.

As an aside....why do AMG not outsource this gearbox work to another company who can get it spot on???
Getrag ZF etc etc would all be up to it....and it's no slight on Merc as these companies supply all the industry including Porsche, Macca Ferrari etc etc..

Yes it is a certain bet that this will be the next safety car.
Its first public unveiling is due at the German GP in a few months.

Sorry to say so, but the SLS double clutch gearbox is from Getrag and is the same the Ferrari 458 has.

And a friend of mine is working for transmission specialist Hofer here in Stuttgart and he says that there is a mile wide difference between those two in terms of Software application quality. The Mercedes DCT is way better then the other.

Lets hope for a great car!

Thank you for the correction! :D
Crazy that the SLS and 458 have the same gearbox....they are planets apart. But your explanation of software makes sense. Appreciated.

The Software of the Transmission is applicated by the OEM themselves. Getrag only delivers the "hardware". Any difference in the shift feel between the Ferrari and AMG models does not lie in the hands of Getrag.

I do not believe that the AMG software application can said to be the better one though. But that maybe depends on personal taste and "application style".

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I recall reading that it will use an V8 engine with the architecture of two '45 engines mated together. Right?

That being so, it is reasonable to expect the V8 to have a flat-plate crank. If they let this baby rev high, it should sound pretty damn good, then.

They share the same architecture, which is slightly different than welding 2 of the A45 amg lumps together.
That would have resulted in in 720bhp and 900nm torque!

This car could be mental, I mean, look at AMG and turbocharging, 4 liter V8 for this. Say if it had two AMG A45 engines, that's 710hp  but I do not think that would be it. If it says they are going for the 911 then it is going to make power and, maybe, like the A45, have some pretty good fuel economy numbers. A45 is claimed to hit 40mpg on an engine which produces 175 horsepower per liter and four wheel drive! I really hope it is going to look good.

That's unlikely, torque will be more in the range of 700nm I suppose.

700 nanometers of torque? :D

i really hope the car is more futuristic than that picture potsed above. as much as i like the sls/porsche look, i wish they make it more mental!
