Montoya to Renault?

Post

Juan Pablo Montoya is being lined up for a switch to Renault next season, with sources claiming that team sponsor Telefonica is pushing hard to secure the services of the Colombian.

The McLaren driver will be out of contract at the end of this year and his recent comments claiming he was open to offers from rival teams appears to have kicked Renault's backers into action.

According to insiders, Telefonica was left far from impressed at Fernando Alonso's decision to defect to McLaren in 2007 - especially because the team will be sponsored by telecommunications rival Vodafone.

With Telefonica keen to tap into both Spain and the Spanish-speaking South American market through its F1 involvement, having just withdraw from its sponsorship involvement in MotoGP, company bosses are believed to have set their sights on capturing Montoya after his recent outspoken comments regarding his future.

If Montoya is really leaving, then Renault would be a no-brainer. Perhaps after this season toyota will finally be considered a good option too, but at the moment toyota is still a future successor. Other than those too, the top teams really don't have seats open, with the soon opening sears booked full by the rumour mill.
Perhaps the best solution would still be to sit tight and see how the mclaren situation unfolds.

I disagree.
I believe that if Renault reliability is anything to go on, and if they stay in F1 in '07, it would be a smart move for JPM. However if he continues driving like hes the only one on track, perhaps Renault should rethink.

As much as I dislike the renault team, It would be a great move for JPM as that car is only going to get better. Until Mclaren get a good engine, they will not win a championship. Fernando's patience will be tested next year.
Then again with alll that Mclaren money he got, and he is world champion, he has nothing to loose.

I think the Renault car would suit JPM very well, the teams image is that of a more fun-loving care-free one...well it is compared to Mclaren. that and the Renaults are (in)famous for being so kind to their tyres...great for a driver as aggressive as Juan.

Either way, Renault or Mclaren....its not like Juan Pablo has a bad future ahead of him is it?!

jgredline,
I'm really sorry you hate the Renault team, but obviously you have to learn from the best. the way they're winning is phenomenal. maybe if you combine the Renault with the McLaren aero, then you'll get the perfect car.

Hate is a strong word. Just because you don't like a team does not mean you hate them. I have the utmost respect for the Renault team and what they have accomplished in the short time they have been back as a factory team. I mean look at what they have accomplished compared to say Honda, BMW, Toyota for example. As for Flavio I give him mad props for what he has done in two differant generations. What he did with Beneton and Shuey was amazing in itself and then to come back and do it again after being away mind you with the Renault team and a young Fernando is nothing short of amazing.
Do I like them? No. Do I hate them? no Do I repect them? Yes.

Its no secret that I am pulling for JPM to upset Kimi this coming year, but even beating his team mate and not winning the world title would be a dissapointment because Mclaren in my own opinion have the best chassis and so its frustrating to see the engine as the week link. Mercedez needs to stop blaming both drivers and look in the mirror. They have cost Kimi the championship last year and perhaps even the year before.

Well, I saw Juan Pablo winning the Formula Renault in 1992, in Colombia. Maybe he can repeat this feat 15 years later.

Actually, last Sunday, El Tiempo in Bogotá, cites an Autosport interview with Montoya: "Estoy pensando en lo que voy a hacer. No se sabe qué pasará en McLaren, pero yo estoy abierto a otras ofertas" (I am thinking what to do. You do not know what will happen inside McLaren, but I am open to other offers). http://eltiempo.terra.com.co/depo/depof ... 08878.html

El Tiempo also says that "The colombian, Juan Pablo Montoya, one of the main pilots of the McLaren-Mercedes team, has said that he has not in his sights to sit and wait for offers in 2007 to continue driving, and that he will make his own plans for this campaign, in which the spaniard Fernando Alonso will go on to pilot one of the racing cars for the anglo-german team. The colombian knows that, after the contracting of Fernando Alonso, there is only a driving spot for the next season."

Montoya's "official site" has right now a poll going on about "On what team would you like to see Juan Pablo driving in 2007?". McLaren is winning with 52% of the votes. Renault is in a humble third position with 14%, after Ferrari with a mediocre 21%. http://www.jpmontoya.com/JPMForum/Es/opinionpoll.asp

Finally, Telefónica has said publicily that they are interested in "Pedro De la Rosa y JPM". Curiously, both pilots have the same manager, and they are in McLaren, which is being accostumed to replace personnel... :) You also have to think that Alonso's cataclismic contract came after Telefónica liquidated all its assets in the Motorbike series and was in talks with Renault to take MildSeven spots (on races the tobacco company could not show its livery). http://www.marca.com/edicion/marca/moto ... 17674.html
