F1 start up procedure

Post

Hi all.
Avid F1 follower here.
I've always wondered what happens from the time an F1 car is offloaded from the rig transporting it, to when it hits the track for the first time that day.
I've heard that F1 cars need to be warmed up slowly for 4 hours before they can be started ?
So, what I'm looking for here is a point by point process of how this all happens - example :
1. Car off loaded.
2. Car placed on jacks / stands.
3. Wheels bolted on.
4. Engine warming up procedure for 4 hours
5. Etc etc etc.
Anyone out there who can fill in he details ?
Looking forward to hearing from the guys in the " know".... :D

I don't have a full answer for you but I suspect that since the engines are made to very close/tight tolerances in bearings and such that it can only be started when it's in a specific temperature window.

My guess is that they have an external heater for the coolant and probably even the oil and they circulate the fluids through the heaters until the engine is hot enough, then they disconnect the lines and start the engine.
I dont think this takes 4 hours though...

Not just bearings etc, the cylinder bore is the main issue. The cylinders simply won't move (too much friction) if the temperature is wrong.

Couldn't resist to share the procedure from a WRC rallycar:

1) Turn master switch on
2) Turn ignition on
3) Press start button

That is for a WRC Fiesta, I hear the older more (electronically) complicated cars needed more buttons work! :)
