Post

I saw this picture at the gumball 3000 rally this year.

I know it is a renault but I never seen this car before.

Simon: Nils? You can close in now. Nils?
John McClane: [on the guard's phone] Attention! Attention! Nils is dead! I repeat, Nils is dead, ----head. So's his pal, and those four guys from the East German All-Stars, your boys at the bank? They're gonna be a little late.
Simon: [on the phone] John... in the back of the truck you're driving, there's $13 billon dollars worth in gold bullion. I wonder would a deal be out of the question?
John McClane: [on the phone] Yeah, I got a deal for you. Come out from that rock you're hiding under, and I'll drive this truck up your ass.

I have it in a book.

A sports spider, had its own racing series in France.

The windscreens became obsolete to save weight.

it had the 2.0l 150bhp engine from the clio williams, very very nice looking car but came with no roof and was heavy, hence why the elise killed it off

I dont understand what this means, I was reading the wikipedia article about this car.

"The gearbox and the engine were one unit transversally fixed in an oscillating hinge (an arrangement inspired by aeronautical design),"

That page is almost exactly like in my book.

Oscellation is (I'm pretty sure) rotation of the object through a fixed axis. Like a pendulum. Hence the term 'pilot induced occelation.' A fishtail type scanario. In this case I think the engine is swivelled sideways, At 90 degrees when viewed from the front of the car, with the gearbox and is allowed to rotate slightly under vibration. I can't think of any advantages. Am I right?

I think what it means is the engine and rear axel are slung from the back of the car like so

From what I can gather I think the engine and gearbox are fixed in one axis and the normal movement and vibration is alowed to turn around the centre line of this axis. I would imagine that this is either through the centre line of the differential or the crank shaft.

Think of a box on its end with a shaft through the bottom quarter, rather like the crank shaft in an engine. Now rigidly mount the shaft to the bottom of the chassis. The box is now firmly fixed but it is free to rotate around the shaft. Now fix the top of the box to a chassis bulkhead using a soft mounting that allows a little movement and damps out any vibration.

Hope this helps

I saw a picture of one next to an Elise today and although pretty striking it had production car written all over it... where as an Elise looks like a race car for the road.

The illustration at the page above, which i couldn't "img" for some reason, shows the engine and suspension setup pretty well. It looks like the chassis ends where the engine begins and the suspension is a trailing link unit.

Like the illustration Sawtooth-spike, but I don't think the engine and transmission swing with the suspension, that really would be an increadible amount of unsprung weight

I was trying to answer m3_lover's question about "The gearbox and the engine were one unit transversally fixed in an oscillating hinge (an arrangement inspired by aeronautical design)," but I can't draw and post a diagram.

Talking about Renault and Lotus... apart from F1 years there are couple of other things that connected them. Lotus Europa which was first mid-engined road car had tuned engine from Renault 16 and Lotus Elan had same rear lights as Renault Alpine of that time.
