The quick fix for sound? Camshafts.

Post

By doubling camshaft speed or using symmetric, twin lobe profiles per cam, the current PUs could be turned into two-stroke engines. They would end up sounding like they are operating at 24k rpm, while still trundling along at 12k.

Aside from valvetrain design, the rest of the PU can remain unchanged. The MGU-H compressor will be well suited to flushing the cylinder per stroke. Reprogram the ECU to deliver higher injection and ignition frequency. If a two stroke combustion moment can produce half as much power as the current 4-stroke combustion moment, then the fuel flow rate too can remain unchanged. If not, it could be raised as required.

If you want more detonations per minute, why not change the minimum revs from 10.500 to letโ€™s day 18.000 rpm?

You mean maximum revs surely??

The max revs are already allowed to be higher, but the loss of efficiency is such that PU manufacturers work around the lower, more efficient power band.

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Why obsess over ultra high rpm (sounding) engines? Wasn't always that way and cars sounded great.
Grip is a four letter word. All opinions are my own and not those of current or previous employers.

No, minimum revs. In the current rules the max fuel flow is 100 l/h from 10.500 rpm onwards.

Why hasn't anyone pointed out that this fundamentally cannot work...

Where is the piston when you open one of the valves 180 deg out of phase from where it should be?

In theory it could work, you'll flush the engine when the cylinder is down, but that would be a very inefficient flush. like, 40% instead of the 90 for a four stroke. High revs wouldn't really be possible because you only have a few degrees of crank to flush, so 13.000 rpm is out to the question.

In other words, you could make a ICE run like this, but it would be highly inefficient and run like crap.
