One lap too many. RIP Stirling Moss

Motor racing has lost one of the old time greats. Sir Stirling Moss has died at the age of 90.

One of the all-time greats from the really dangerous period of motorsports. Sir Stirling could drive anything & win everywhere. He still holds the record for the fastest completion of the Mille Miglia.

Propped against the wheel of one of his old cars and just chatting about his career etc. He was frail, sadly, but he made the effort to come out and make himself available.



A great day out where you could get right up next to his old cars, along with many others. I mean you could stand an inch away from them and, if you were so minded, lean on them. Great day out.

Such a shame, RIP Stirling. I can hear his voice as clear as day from my childhood days of constantly playing Grand Prix Manager 2. Rest well old chap, you fully deserve it

Sad to find out Stirling is gone. Many other posts say that better.

Know what I like about our sport? It's so very young. In my middle-age lifetime, I've been around for the death of Fangio, Ferrari, Moss, Gurney, etc. The people who made road racing great were with us until very recently. Some still are with us.

I started following F1 in the mid-80's as a kid. So I've directly followed more than half the duration of the F1 World Championship. It's that easy. You don't get that intimacy with the distant past if you've followed conventional stick-n-ball sports.

Which also reminds us how joined-at-the-hip car racing is to car culture. I think we're lucky to be F1 fans over the last 10, 20, 30 years. It's been fantastic. Our car culture is changing now, so I don't know that our sport will have the staying power of more abstract stick-n-ball sports. Happy to be here now.

News of Sir Stirling's passing hit me really hard.

He was keen trials fan in his early days and had a very competitive cannon trials car, he was a grassroots racer with the talent to make it to the big time.

He was one of the all-time greats in and out of the car, and isn't going to be replaced any time soon.
