air-oil separator in dry sump application

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

air-oil separator in dry sump application

Post

Can anyone explain how a centrifugal air-oil separator works?

I need to analyse this type of component in a dry sump lubrication system. In my case it is located between the scavenge pump and the oil tank, and its function is to separate the oil from the blow-by gases.

However, I have not been able to find much information about the internal geometry or any photos of these separators.

Does anyone know what type of separator is typically used in racing cars, or have any references, diagrams, or pictures?

Thanks!

You might start by googling 'centrifugal oil/air separator'

I've searched on Google for almost a week, but I haven't found anything useful. So I'm hoping someone on this forum might know something about it

Normally the centrifugal oil/air separator for a dry sump system is inside the dry sump tank itself, the oil from the sump will be returned to the top of the dry sump tank and it will then fall down the tank via a conical section with de-aerates the oil.

Some commercial diesel applications use one to separate particulate matter from oil as well (increasing service intervals). They are a joy to clean out though!!

Do you happen to know where I could find the geometries of these oil tanks?

From what I understand, in this case the air–oil separation occurs through the creation of a cyclone inside the tank, without any moving parts.

However, I was wondering if there are also centrifugal separators (with a rotor and a stator) that can be installed between the scavenge pump and the oil tank, so that the oil entering the tank is already deaerated.

Thanks in advance for any information.
