I'm surprised at the lack of comment on this. With the amount of posts regarding Top Gear I'd have thought this would have solicited a much greater response.
It seems a tyre blew out at very high speed (250 mph+) and the car veered off of the runway and onto the surrounding grass. It rolled many times and ended upside down with the top of the roll cage buried in the ground.
The car was righted, roll cage cut away and Hamster (Richard Hammond) removed. He briefly regained conscienceness as an air ambulance was on its way to him.
I hope he's OK and that Top Gear continue to do all the weird and wonderful things they do. I hope the enquiery (sp?) concludes all correct safety precautions were in place and that this was just an unfortunate accident.
If he does shuffle off this mortal coil we can all celebrate his life and remember he went doing something he loved. If he's OK, what a story for down the pub!
I heard about this.
I don't think he's critical anymore, which is only good news, but he suffered severe head injuries as the roll cage dug in.
I've heard 3 reports of the accident, speeds ranging from 280 to 315mph and you don't have small accidents at those speeds.
Anyway, good luck Richard.
Get well soon.

Tell a man there are 300 million stars in the universe and he'll believe you. Tell him a bench has wet paint on it and he'll have to touch to be sure.
You really should'nt have posted 'if he does shuffle......' its highly offensive to anyone who may read this that knows him, and is offensive to me, please remove this comment as it is insensitive and unnecessary.

According to Jeremy Clarkson he walked, unaided, but "shakily" to the toilet on Friday evening.
Yet more improvement from Hamster.
I'll be honest, don't believe too much the media says; in THE SAME report frm Sky News they said:
"In our headlines today, TV presenter Richard Hammond is in hospital with a Serious Brain Injury". Later in the same story, "Doctors say they are confident he will make a full recovery"
Well I'm sorry but when I hear about a "Serious Brain Injury" you tend to think of a situation where a FULL recover is not possible.
End of the day, the poor guy has got hurt, but the fireman who came to the sence said altho he was drifting in & out of consciousness he was told by Hammond that "He had back pain". That is good, if he can feel back pain his spine isn't broken.
At hospital he was in an intesive care unit, but now has been moved to a high dependancy unit (a move for the better) and now we hear not only has he had a brief conversation with James May, but he has now taken his first steps after the accident as witnessed by Jeremy Clarkson.
Hamster's getting better! Let's just hope he makes a full recovery.
Silence is golden when you don't know a good answer.
Heikkirocks, I'm not sure how good your English is, it seems pretty good and I don't mean to insult you, but "shuffle off this mortal coil" is a well known and regularly used saying in England.
No offence is meant by it and I doubt Hamster's family would be offended by it.
I feel no need to apologise for it, I won't remove it and in a similar situation I'd use it again.
On the bright side it looks like Hamster is going to be OK and this may just be a great story for the pub.
EKE--In your remark; that Mr Hammond did not shufle off this mortal coil-
there is no need to apologise for using this popular phrase-- as he did not perish. As to percieved insensitivity--I have an associate and good friend of 25 years-- who is a practicing Dr. of Neurophyscology, who specializes in the assesment of brain injury--in the past--he remarked--that he had assessed a case of a man who had merely fallen from a chair and incurred permanent problems of mobility and cognition. We all hope that Mr Hammond makes a full recovery. If his recovery is poor--he may not be able to "shuffle" at all. God forbid this possibility.
Heikkirocks: Sir --Your English language skills are excellent. I probably made more errors of syntax and spelling than your post. I share your concern for Mr Hammond and the feelings expressed for his family and friends. Recovery from such injuries are often remarkable. I do hope his recovery is consistant and total--- his doctors will certainly observe his progress over months, guarding against any possibility that his condition may change.
Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is continuing to recover in hospital, with friend Jeremy Clarkson saying the crash victim has taken his first steps.
The 36-year-old has now been moved out of the high dependency unit and onto a general ward, his family said.
