I notice that there is alot of that Shakira stuff popping up on our forum. Since there is no way to keep them from registering and posting on an open forum like this, is there anyway some of our computer geniuses can send a lethal virus to their link? Or to their email since I believe a valid email account is required.

Well you just have to make it a bit harder for the bots to register. Captchas used to be the 'in' thing several years back. There's also this:

Just change it to pics of max & stoddy or something.

You can try that "please type in the characters you see" thing that many websites are doing.

One of the best security measures I found was also on ING direct online, but that may be extremely difficult to integrate.

Well West what you describe is CAPTCHA. I added it earlier to the feedback forms and calendar submit form with no more spam coming to me from those pages.

I was about to wait until phpbb3 to integrate this captcha to the forum but it's getting so annoying and so much work that I'll do it this weekend. No matter what. Generally speaking, phpbb3 will request captcha for registering and guest posting, if enabled

Just an idea: wouldn't be easier to limit posting of external links (urls)to users with, let's say, over 10 or 15 posts?

This way we wouldn't have to type random numbers every time we post something because of a moron. I have no idea if this is easier for you (I think so) than using Captcha, or if your forum software is able to do it, but you can take a look to Race Car Simulations (or Formula One Database, not sure) forum, which uses that mechanism. I also don't know if it will backfire and the moron will post trash 15 times just to post the Shakira nude (??), undiscovered stock or viagra link.

Well Ciro you won't have to type in a code for the CAPTCHA every time you post, it will only be required if someone wants to register a new user

And since I already did it for the earlier mentioned forms, I think it should be relatively straightforward to to that asap.

Understood, Tomba, thanks. The Captcha implementation defends you (well, I should say defend us) from robots. I've seen a couple of scripts on the subject, but I'm not sure if they are useful for your site... I strongly believe they are for phpBB forums (they appear in one), but I am still trying to understand them, so I am not even able to say if you can use them for this problem.

The 15-posts-before-linking is another measure that kill robots and "stray users" that try to promote their own site. Of course you know about flood control for the "nasty" multi-posting robots, but if you haven`t implemented you must have your reasons (no need to explain or even answer me, my dear and busy friend).

The visual confirmation (aka CAPTCHA) has now been activated for user registration.

Obviously, Ciro, spam will always exist, but the sharira stuff should now be very limited, as I find it highly unlikely that those are regular visitors. Almost all of these spam messages are from bots.
As I said, I programmed captcha into feedback form too and I don't get any more spam from that form since then. I think it will greatly help for the forum too

Today 8 spammers managed to register, so I deleted the standard forum's CAPTCHA stuff and replaced it with some more advanced one, the same as used in any image validation you will see on this site

Why not put 5 F1 related questions with 3 answers to choose from?

for example:

1. How many cylinders f1 engines have? 8-10-12
2. What are f1 brake discs made of? steel-carbon-aluminum
3. Who is the president of FIA? Bernie Ecclestone-Ron Dennis-Max Mosley
4. Jenson Button scored his first win with: Renault-BMW-Honda
5. Juan Manuel Fangio was: Italian-Argentinian-Brazilian

You could have database of let's say 50 such questions known to any f1 fan and than add some script that would show them in group of 5 randomly after each reloading

Have you tried the security on ING direct online? You have to "dial" in your pin, but instead of numbers, letters are used (picture the opposite of a telephone). The letters get mixed up everytime, and there's an option to actually use the mouse to click in your pin. You also have to answer some questions before you log in.
