F2007 engine problems

Post

Ferrari’s troubled week of testing reached the peak on Thursday. With bad weather continuing to spoil the Ferrari’s testing session Felipe Massa, in the new F2007, stopped at the Vallelunga circuit’s ’Trincea’ corner after hearing an odd noise from the engine. The car was towed back to the pits to have a fresh V8 fitted.

Just specualtion but I would imagine they are using up last year's old race engines in testing? Any old lump will do when you're shaking down the car.

well, even with the "engine problems", the new car broke the lap record:
04/04/06 M. Gene F2004 V10 Clear 1:13.052 (last record).
25/01/07 F. Massa F2007 Rain then sunny 1:13.029

That's why it blew. If that engine wasn't driven beyond limits it wouldn't brake lap record

Since teams have until March 1st to submit their final re-tuned engine specs to the FIA, it's good that Ferrari's pushing their engine as much as possible. The only way to know the limit is to exceed it.

I tried this and I had understeer, I tried that and I had oversteer, at the end of the corner I just run out of talent

is massa's helmet just getting brighter and brighter or is it just me ?

but i definately agree with ferrari pushing the limits of their car, it is the best way to know where they stand in reliability and performance, because as mclaren knows, to finish first, first you have to finish

this time I believe the PR. its impossible that the engine grenaded itself in the first lap, so either it was electronics or a mechanics messed up.

I have to admit I'm a little worried by Ferrari's testing pace, even though it might just be that their goal at the moment is for reliability and not just speed,
I hope we can win the Championships this year, and hopefully the coming years as well
but im sure that things will get better by the end of testing and before the start of the season in australia

Ferrari are going to be making a substantial aerodynamic upgrade before Australia, to be tested in Bahrain. So I wouldn't worry...yet.

As far as the electronic problem goes, I'd almost rather the failure be a blown engine. Since testing involves pushing the limits, I can understand a blown engine. Electrical problems look like something else to me.

Yeah, it's only testing. But not good.

Try adding all engine blows Ferrari had during testing in previous 10 years and you'll start fearing that blows they are having right now are definitely not intentional "testing the limits" kind of thing especially since RPM's are limited to 19k.

I have a friend there on Montmeló and he says that certainly, the pace is quite good there, they seem very fast, whereas the McLarens for example, don't look so fast. This is also similar to what another friend there says me; so I don't the pace is bad at all, unfortunately, we just get the best laps.

Today, it was an electronic problem as said up there. Whereas, Alonso had real mechanic problems at 17.04
