In many a home

where dad has made a habit of holding his fort in front of the largest TV of the house during F1 weekends there comes a time when Jr. declares his steadfast intent of becoming an F1 driver. While your chest fills with pride in anticipation of future feats and you immediately want to do everything possible to accommodate his dream, trust me when I say you'd want to have a plan ready. And, provided you haven't earned your first million fresh out of college and acquired many more of those since then to keep the first one company, a frugal and ascetic mindset can come in handy.

Or, alternatively, if you're not the selfless kind and believe everyone has to carry their own weight, have a lawyer friend fashion a contract along the lines of: "When I've become a famous and succesful F1 driver, I will reimburse my dad for a sum of $8,720,000. Plus interest. Plus expenses. And buy a nice car for him and his trophy girlfriend (document to be considered legally binding by a crayon signature or fingerpaint thumbprint of indeterminable colour)." Whatever the case, you can start your preparations by reading this feature .

Damn, my dad has put very little towards my racing costs, he made it quite clear that if I was going to be playing about with cars in a big field it would be at my own expense and he might tow the car there if he wasn't too busy. All the other junior drivers have parents who are huge rally fans and spend more time on the car than the kid does. Of course they get rewarded with a race themselves. Luckily I've just got a job so I should get a little more competitive.

If I remember correctly Alain Prost's parents invested in his career 650 franks. Perhaps it was 6.500 but certainly not 65.000. I read that 15 years ago so I don't remember it well.

A sound investment however much it was. We don't hear enough about Prost these days.
