"road legal"

Post

Hi guys, does someone know where to find the rules which a custom made car must follow in order to be road legal in the EU. I can´t find them anywhere on the net, I even mailed the Swedish Transportation Ministry but it seems they wont answer... :-k

What a complex question...
There is a vast array of legislation that must be met for vehicles to have approval for sale europe-wide. In this case, you will be mainly concerned with eventual UN regulation and EC directives.
Working in the bus industry, I know by heart the most important ones to my activity. Some of them are general and apply to light vehicles. But most don't, so the places to start are http://eur-lex.europa.eu and http://www.unece.org/trans/main/welcwp29.htm, where most legislation is grouped. For instance, relevant legislation for you that I use also may be the UN Regulation E/ECE/324 - E/ECE/TRANS/505, concerning electromagnetic emissions of road vehicles or the 2003/97/CE, that regulate the rearview mirrors...

Thanks for the links, I´ll check them out :)

And I´m not talking about selling, I´m talking about building your custom car in your garage and then driving it on the road...

I merely

Googled "swedish vehicle inspection" and came up with a company, "Bilprovningen", responsible for all inspections of registered vehicles in Sweden.

Bilprovningen in English

Changing the query to "swedish national road administration" yielded this:

Me too, I was talking about conceiving vehicles in conditions to be homologated. Being a one off or a serial vehicle type, one must always go through the inspection of the homologation office.
Yes, your national homologation office should also be a good contact, since, beside the UN and EC rules that you must comply with, most countries have also some national norms that must be obeyed, as well.
