onboard cameras

Post

just a question out of curiosity, how many onboard cameras are required on a car?

i thought it was 3, but im not too entirely sure.

normaly there in the T-bar and on the front nosecone, but ive seen them in mirrors, next to airbox(this is becoming more common), in the car, just infront of the cockpit.

are they chosen by the FIA or FOM where they are, or do teams decide the best ways to put them?

There are a number of places the teams can put cameras or 'dummy cameras' (to ensure no team gets a weight penalty).

The position is decided by the team in consultation with the stewards/FIA.

Not sure about nos - see the rules?

ARTICLE 20 : TELEVISION CAMERAS AND TIMING TRANSPONDERS

20.1 Presence of cameras and camera housings :

All cars must be fitted with either two cameras, two camera housings or one of each at all times throughout the Event.

20.2 Location of camera housings :

Camera housings, when used, must be fitted in the same location as cameras. Details concerning the size and weight of all camera housings may be found in the Appendix to these regulations.

20.3 Location and fitting of camera equipment :

20.3.1 All cars must be equipped with five positions in which cameras or camera housings can be fitted. Referring to Drawing 6, all cars must carry a camera or camera housing in position 4, the position of the remaining camera or camera housing will be determined by the FIA after consultation with the relevant Competitor.

Once positions are determined in the above manner, any decision as to whether a camera or camera housing is fitted in those positions will rest solely with the relevant Competitor.

20.3.2 Any camera or dummy camera fitted in positions 2, 3 or 4 shown in Drawing 6 must be mounted in order that its major axis does not subtend an angle greater than 5° to the reference plane.

lambsie: first, welcome by all means. Sorry, I was in a hurry when I wrote my previous post.

That's (probably) why I posted such a small image. What you thought is camera number 6 is actually number 5. There are only 5 positions (altough in the mirrors, nosecone or engine cover there are left/right sites, making a total of 8 sites where you can put the cameras). The number 5 in the previous image seems like a 6, my fault.

I take the opportunity to remind everybody that there is a link to the regulations on the home page (to the right of the page) that Tomba added recently. I failed to remember that, I looked for the FIA page directly... :D

It seems to me like some teams have their cameras in the same position quite often: The Ferraris have the mirror-mounted one used to show the driver, while McLaren's are usually viewed from the front, facing backwards.

Do teams design the car with full knowledge of where the cameras are going to be placed? Or when does the FOM/FIA inform them of where they want them?

It came to me by wathching how the camera placement has changes from last years cars to this years, like on the Ferrari, they used to be higher up on the nose but now are much lower, and the camera housing is very integrated into the bodywork.
