Double pit boxes

Post

I hear that the teams set up two tandem pit boxes in front of each garage during some practice sessions but not during quali or the race. I am unaware of any rules forbidding double pit boxes during the races and even vaguely remember Toyota using a dual box set up at some time in the past. We know that there always two fuel rigs ready to go for each driver.

In races with a high Safety Car probability might it be advantageous to use a dual set up in order to avoid stacking up like that which ruined Kovalainen's race?

there is a rule, and it has to do with only allowing one pit crew to service the cars during the race. so yeah there are two boxes, but with only crew you have to stack your stops or pit at different times.

Thanks for that. Perhaps you can also answer this: would it be legal for the one crew to service both cars simultaneously -- half a crew for each car?

I am not saying you are wrong but I would like to see the rule. I still think I remember Toyota using two boxes some time back.

Definitely, we should have two pit boxes per team, under the current SC rules.

On the other hand, it would be more efficient: Ferrari could rip TWO hoses at the same time. :)

I guess it's in the regs somewhere but I remember Steve Matchett (SPEED channel commentator, WC winning mechanic for Benetton) saying only one crew can service the car during a race and he's never wrong when it comes to that kinda stuff...They can use two boxes during practice but that's it.

heheh sure I can answer that: no. :) ok I don't have the rule in front of me--I could be wrong (although I'm not)--but my point is that if there were a better, and legal, way for the teams to do pit stops they would be doing it.

2008 Sporting Regulations, 23.1 b)

http://argent.fia.com/web/fia-public.ns ... 5-2008.pdf

b) The FIA will designate an area in the pit lane where each team may work and one place where pit stops during both practice and the race may be carried out.

Which leads me to an observation. I recall witnessing when Ferrari ran two "teams" during qualifying. Each car had their own individuals doing the pit stop duties. According to the regulations, this is not forbidden, because article 23.1 b) only covers race and practice..... but no mention of qualifying.
Racing should be decided on the track, not the court room.
