Nae, I postulate you for World Champion of Realism, along with Fernando Alonso. :D

myF1dream: I don't know but, can you use this forum to explain what's all about?

For example, the crux of the issue is people (and thus, money). What's the bussiness plan? Who are the organizers working with? And, over all, if you're the one running the site, how in heaven did you find this thread so quickly?

You can count on me, of course. I'm pretty good with roads (or so I think). NO one, but no one except me should have the prestigious and exalted role of "Chief Road Modeler" at your team. :)

I think that (without delving into the site! ):

a. Funds should be given toward the team, just to fund it. Selling merchandise could not be the way.
b. Funds should be held by some kind of third party with impeccable reputation.
c. Fans should receive something in return for their money: their name on the livery, for example or a lottery to drive the car, whatever.
d. Maybe it's better to do it by stages. What about a kart championship, in first place?
e. Engineers should come from colleges. That would make it interesting (and it would catch some news time, if successful)
f. The most news-worthy thing could be to held some kind of championship to get the driving positions: I suggest you pick the kart champions in the "lowest" series around the world, that is, KF4, Formula 100 or Rotax.

We're talking what? Two-three hundred millions? That's a lot of money, even if the site gets enough fans.

I think it's doable, but it has to get the fame of "one red paperclip" or something similar. Heck, I bet Bernie would help, if it gives him some good comments... :)

someone did the same a couple months ago to try to save Super Aguri.
obviously they failed. and to be honest it is almost impossible for a fan based team to complete with manufacturers-backed teams that have almost unlimited resources.
even a team like Williams lost 80million in the past two years.

I disagree. ALL teams are fan based, if you take a good look at the bussiness side. Super Aguri (and Williams, maybe) has not enough fans, that's all.

Not one of the teams sells anything but publicity, friends. F1 is all about entertainement, we're not talking about a factory of commodities. Duh.

Yeaaa... having an opinion poll of some odd thousand people on how to run the team, engines, drivers, etc... is a surefire way to not be on podium.

They have 8,000 members.. once they have 70,000 they start charging 35 pounds per year...

It would be well past 2011 before they would have a shot in hell of building a chassis, much less racing, much less making podium.

Look at Toyota's success with their budget and automotive knowledge base...

I guess if Richard Branson were to get involved, it could become a reality rather quickly.

The problem is with the "elite" accepting the "newcomer".

It seems that in F1, the best chance to beat someone in the championship is to stop them from ever competing.

Kinda sounds like American politics now that I think about it....

Well, I guess they could give some weight (in the polls) to people that had correct guesses before, Tom. This, or trust the "collective wisdom". I bet most of you are familiar with Sowecki's book (and if not, you have a chance in the previous link to read an excerpt). I quote:

"What people probably won't remember is that every week "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" pitted group intelligence against individual intelligence, and that every week, group intelligence won."

Who knows, he might be right. We should run a poll to find out... :)

There's a slight difference in subject material... if I polled a Millionaire audience about tire F&M data, and pitted them against a race tire engineer... the audience isn't going to be winning.

Leave race engineering, to race engineers.
