KERS in practicality

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

KERS in practicality

Post

As I am intrigued by the introduction of KERS for 2009, I am most curious as how implement this in a practical fashion. I understand that the car is allowed to store a max of 400 kJ (400 kWs) per lap, this energy spent equally over ten seconds will mean a power input of 40 kW or some 50 hp.

My question is how to transfer this from, as well as back to, the wheels when a 40 kW electrical generator/motor would be quite cumbersome, no?
