Barge boards etc

Post

Hello everyone, my first post here.

If, to quote Toyota,s tech specs "Aerodynamic add-ons, such as barge boards, turning vanes and winglets, are banned" how come they and Ferrari have them at the front of their sidepods? Or am I just being niave?

As you can see Toyota have them, too. You can look into 2009 Season regulation thread, and in the discusiion of Ferrari F60 and Toyota TF109, but for short there are areas where the regulation that effectively ruled out flip-ups, fins and other furniture (namely the minimum radius rule) is not applied. Both teams used that space to place some aero-elements.

Ah, as I thought, I'd missed something. This is going to be an interesting area for fun and games then.

I wonder if the 2008 Force India wing mount would still be legal on a F60 type pillar?

THAT would be seriously cool!

I thought alot about the wing mirror mountings and had thought a few things out, i'll quickly pop them up on ms paint :D

Note how bad my MS paint skills are but you should be able to get the general just of it im sure :)

First one a long aerofoil to the start of the cockpit as a flow straightener

Second a cockpit to side pod mounting, if there was some way to convince the FIA the mirror wasn't stable enough sitting out on its own.

Not sure if I got the idea, but wasn't something like that in use in 2000, both by McLaren and Ferrari?

Image

If you look closely you will notice a small aerofoil on both sides of the nose, on both cars. The cockpit to sidepod mounting is like built-in the design on both cars also, but obviously the Ferrari nose is higher. I could be misinterpreting your idea though...

This picture made me think. Does those small horns on the Ferrari on the sides of the airbox work the same as McLaren's design around that area in the MP4-23/24?

From that picture, ive thought of another thing for the 2009 cars, is that rear wing design with the extra element at the top legal for 09??? BMW Sauber have tested such a design, so id asume it must be.

The rear wing can have no more than 2 elements. The wing BMW were testing was used only to simulate the amount of DF their far more secret new 2009 rear wing would produce.

@FLC: The vertical fences on side of the nose were a simple means to comply with the regulations of minimum cockpit height ahead of the driver's head. It was aerodynamically beneficial to have a lower nose. It can be seen on a lot of cars of that age, but it was later agreed between the teams that such avoidance of rules is unsafe and therefore disallowed by a 'gentlemens agreement'.

As for the mirrors, I think that there is a maximum surface of the mirrors when being projected on the ground, or at least a limitation on dimensions. This regulation was fuelled to prevent pointy mirrors, also because of safety considerations.
