When do brakes glow?

Post

We went for a drive last night and after some heavy (but not extreme) braking got the disk temperature up to 375 deg C.

I was just wondering how far this is off glowing?

At a guess I would say during the actual brake application, not 20 seconds later while we parked up they must have been over 500 deg c???

Glowing depends on the material.

Glow is caused by the changing of radiative heat from infrared into the visible spectrum and is caused by increase in temperature. I can't find the relevant graph to show you and that's all I can remember. I'm an awesome engineer :P

Nah brah. To get steel cherry red or so, you gotta get it toasty. 1400F or so.

For it to really be glowing a nice bright orange or yellow you're talkin 1600F.

That's so you can actually see it glowing worth a damn.
