I can’t find a reason for Bottas to make way for Hamilton in a scenario where Ham comes to P2, behind him. There is nothing connecting him to the team for the future and he is, possibly, racing his last grands prix with a realistic chance of a race win.
If you are getting paid around 10 million a year to drive a car, the least you can be is professional towards the organisation that employs you. Won’t do any good for his reputation in the long run to behave like that, and he probably knows that..

Just watched that video on the last page.

So he gets pole, but it's not classed as a pole for the records as there is a race penalty? What a joke that is.
Has always been like that. For instance, the pole sitter of the 2012 Monaco GP was Mark Webber because, well, he started on pole.

Bottas is pole because he will start on pole while, at Monza, Valteri set the fastest lap on QLF, won the QLF Sprint Race(or whatever that nonsense is called) but started last, so, officially, no pole for Bottas on Monza 2021
Who got pole at the 1998 Japanese Grand Prix?
Michael. Now, I’m guessing you’re suggesting that stalling from pole on the formation lap means he didn’t “start from pole” but, to phrase it a little differently, it’s because he “took the pole slot on the grid” (even if he didn’t get off the line).

Monaco 2021 is an even better example of what I think you’re trying to say - Leclerc wasn’t even on the grid and still “got pole”. But the bottom line is this: if you get a grid penalty, you don’t get pole. This has always been the case and, even if it might seem weird, there is some logic (ie sometimes the reason for the penalty is an infringement that could have contributed to the pole - eg a fresher engine, not enough fuel in the car etc). Moreover, it’s the same here as it’s always been (at least for the last 30 years or so), so shouldn’t really be a surprise.

Thanks :) I checked your channel first. Looks like I did it a bit too soon :D

It is a joke.. It should count as pole, since the fastest lap belongs to him.
Pole is the driver who starts from pole. /pedant ;)
not 100% as I pointed out with the 98 example.

The reason is called an employment contract. Have no doubt that the contract will include a bit about doing what the team asks you to do during a race. Yes, he could just ignore the team but he would possibly be in breach of contract and that can get expensive if the team decided to make something of it.

Pole is the driver that qualified on pole. The penalty applies after the qualification session. Ergo he's taken pole position.

But this is F1 where sensible rules don't seem to apply.

Got to agree.

It is like the "stupid sprint races".
If they wanted to introduce an additional race then just do it! Dont tinker with the current format and upset the 80% for the 20% who dont care!

Pole position statistics should count ones like Lewis got today. He ended qualifying in 1st place, that's pole to me.

The other stupidity is a driver that is starting back of the grid because of penalties being allowed to run in qualifying. Sainz is starting at the back because of the total PU penalty. But he ran in qualifying and knocked Ricciardo out. That's just ridiculous. Why allow him to run when his runs can't change anything about his starting position? If he was just taking a 10 place penalty then it makes sense to run, but if you're automatically at the back, all that happens is another driver's session is ruined. Stupid rule.

The pole comes from horse racing. You start the race beside a pole. Qualifying is way to decide who starts on pole but not the only way to do so.

I think Lewis had a tiny lift in T8 which was not shown in app telemetry.

Barring any accidents. Hamilton will have to pass perez and alonso. Any given day perez is more difficult to pass than Bottas and Alonso is in legends league ( on same tyre age and he is also looking handy), if verstappen manage to pass bottas at start, game over for merc.
Hamilton passed Alonso in Russia didnt he?
He is even faster here.
For Sure!!
