Apparently, the ICE Lewis is taking is a new spec that Merc has been developing all season, which is why Bottas had been taking so many units.

iirc they can't introduce "new spec" ICE.

It seems that here they retained HAM`s RW that both drivers were running at Mexico race, compared to RB which runs here a spoon RW for a better top speed ... nevertheless even on these conditions, HAM was 6km/h faster on top speed trap due to the new ICE ...

Hamilton really managed to tame the beast on this lap, on the instances where it was complaining, with minimal loss of time (if at all). I'd say that's an A+ effort.

More likely they want to keep the championship fight alive until the final race, cos that's good for viewing figures. They probably also want to avoid having the Stewards effectively decide the WDC. Especially given the fan responses to Silverstone and Monza.

Well thanks to Max inexperience Merc can get off the hook because he was fiddling with the car.
If Hamilton does not get off then Max should not and both i fringements carry a penalty. Max might even be worse as that's a black and white rule.
In Lewis case he can argue Max sabotaged his car or it was damaged because they can compare to Bottas car that has the same parts.

no you can only take one new component per race weekend. the one fitted yesterday would be excluded if he took a new one today!

That would consign him to the back of the grid for the race as well. It depends on how confident he and Mercedes are in their ability to recover to a decent position even with the looming 5 place grid drop.

I mean, even if he did recover to say - 5th (which I find rather far fetched), he'd start the race in 10th. On a second thought, that would actually be alright. but if he ends up in 8th-9th in the sprint, I guess it's better to take an entirely new PU, and start from the back, instead of in 13th-14th.
