Re: 18-inch wheels to be introduced in 2021.

Post

I was initially against moving away from the 13” tyres as I thought it was a part of F1’s appearance/dna, but I have to admit they do look good even on the mules.
They look a little tall on the front of the 21 cars but that will probably be lessened with the new aero/look of the 22 cars.

That Alpine is one of the best matched pictures I've ever seen!! I dislike how tall these tyres are. Monaco I predict we may see some weird crashes as drivers can't see past the tyres.

It’s amazing how well it’s match. I thought the wheels were superimposed at first, until I saw it was a different car. Is that the 2017 Renault?

It's a 2018 Renault. They could use a 2019 car but Alpine/Renault haven't changed chassis since then so all their old (useable) tubs are in the 2021 cars.

Thanks for the background info in addition to the correct car. It’s amazing that a tub design could have been used for that amount of time.

A consequence of the larger tread diameter is that for the same road speeds the tyres will experience fatigue loads at around 85% the frequency of the 13” tyres and the same reduction in total cycles. This could potentially improve the fatigue life and/or allow lower pressures.

It used to be commonplace to use a tub for a B or even C spec car. This was often used to block new rules in the mid 2010s - that a team would have to make a new tub at great expense even though they all used a new tube every year.

It is the comparison at the rear that jumps out at me. The 13” tyres are level with the lower ‘inflection’ of the rear wing end-plate, whereas the 18” tyres are level with the upper ‘inflection’. When you consider that the rear wing end-plate is like it is because they wanted to remove it from having any aero interference with the rear tyre sidewall that is quite incredible!!

They are, but 725mm diameter rather than 660, 670, or 680mm is the rule for whatever reason. I reckon the classic 635mm (25") diameter fronts and 660mm (26") rears like the 80's Goodyears would have looked neat, but it is what it is, and the tyres are very close to the LMP1, LMP2 & GTE tyre diameter.

The profile is pretty much the same as these:

Those saying it's a shame to lose the 'balloon' tyres shouldn't be too concerned, as they are still balloon tyres somewhat!

PS. Does anyone know why Goodyear aren't pushing the Dunlop brand anymore? Are Sumitomo going to take over manufacturing and distribution of Dunlop globally soon, hence Goodyear switching the racing activities like LMP2 & BTCC to "Goodyear Eagles" from "Dunlops"?

It's 55mm difference in height.

Ooo! That's a very different wheel design (BBS Y-spoke type) to the other two wheel designs we've seen. Is that an Apptech wheel perhaps? Is wheel design going to be free in 2022 (not that it matters since they will be covered anyway!)?

No the BBS wheel is the spec all cars will run. Albeit covered anyway.

Interesting to see that the two side-on pictures have been fixed at the axle centreline so the top of the tyre doesn't appear to rise so much. The Alpine picture is a much more accurate indication of how much the height of the whole tyre package is increasing.

But hey, trendy road car type tyres, and all that. Even though they aren't, of course.

I would have preferred say a 650mm diameter like the Porsche Carrera Cup front tyres (so a reduction of 20mm diameter compared to 2021 Pirellis), but the teams obviously have a lot of lobbying power. I wouldn't say 650mm looks particularly thin or painted-on anyway. :)

Image
This is a 270/650 R18 front and 310/710 R18 rear (so the rear is closer to F1) for reference.

Staggered sizes would have looked quite mean IMO, but I guess that would defeat the objective with aligning with LMP tyre sizing and LMP tyre manufacturing.

Formula 1’s new-for-2022 cars will only be half a second per lap slower than the 2021 packages, and will likely surpass their predecessor’s pace through the season, according to Pirelli.
“According to the latest simulations from the teams, the new cars will be around five tenths of a second slower than the current cars,” explained Pirelli chief Mario Isola.

“[That is a] gap that they will probably manage to overcome anyway by the end of next season.”

Pirelli’s 18-inch tyres were run by nine of the 10 teams during two days of running at Yas Marina, with the company encouraged by initial feedback.

Drivers ran mule cars – the majority of them from the 2019 season – that were modified in order to accommodate the larger and heavier wheels.

“I have to say in general we found first of all the delta lap time between compounds in line with our tyre development test, so I can say this number is quite in line with our findings during the year,” said Isola.
