Red Bull announced this morning that they are planning an upgrade package for the first race, which mirrors Mclarens announcement from earlier in the week.
Translation: we have some bits for the car we don't want to reveal to our rivals until the first race.
If it's significant enough to want to hide from rivals surely you'd want to see how it performs on track in testing?
My guess is that normal procedure for all
Of the top teams is: launch car is relative basic, this is used to fine tune the sim, CFD and tunnel so the Barcelona update is calculated more precise. The first race update is done with the not yet 100% fine tuned windtunnel, CFF and sim but would give them to much variables to sync everything if they used that for the test.
For instance, they launch and test with two vanes on the sidepod so they can measure the vortex and put that next to the CFD. The first race sidepod already has 5, but with the test calculations there will be 7 in Barcelona and in just the right spot.
