Aston Martin AMR22

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The front wing so much higher from the ground.
Will that be more inefficent to follow cars

This is all contradictory to the rules we had in the name of close following

The lower front wing, with a neutral section, the lourves on the side pods #-o
It was always meant to be that way. When you use ground effect tunnel you will get wings higher to let clean air in.
Thank you for the explanation.

If so then they could have raised the nose instead.
Like someone said above it looks too retro and generic for me

Andy Green said that The "new" design concept of the coolers is giving them the freedom to reshape the sidebods if necessary. It is to be expected that there is plenty of iterations during the season. In AMuS there is a new article which headlines "AMR22 with flexible concept"
Worth noting this team has significantly reworked the sidepod bodywork in or mid season in every season since 2019, not sure what that says about their design process in the winter

The front wings are higher to help drive air to the tunnels, but they also look way higher than in the past because of the lack of rake, which pitched the front wings to the ground

It's certainly nice to see normal A-arm angles at the front. The larger wheels allow the upper upright connection to be high enough to get rid of the droop we've been seeing for so long. Pretty sure the suspension guys are happy to have a normal camber change on bump.

The cars look Okay... but just too retro for me though. I was looking at the space ships from 2008 and it just makes these look like Indycar or GP-2. Just me though. Maybe with development they will look more futuristic.
Totally agree on this. They took the old school look too far in some areas but if it brings about entertainment I'm willing to forgive the look

I like the look of the new cars from this angle more

As someone else pointed out on twitter, that lower picture shows a different front wing, with the main plane connecting to the nose (and thus being even higher in the middle).
I don't think so. it appears like that from the angle, but this photograph was taken of the car coming out, and the wing is consistent with the renders and the unveil yesterday:

it looks that way in the render too

I hated the 08 cars. Gills, millions of wings and everything looking so fragile and cluttered. Sleekness is more pleasing to my eyes.

But i agree that this is becoming similar to Indycar. Getting bigger and heavier is also not helping.
If i would get the money to start my own F1 team, i would revive Arrows

Yeah, sorry, I just edited my post, I think you are probably right that it's just the angle; on most launch pics of the real car we saw it from above, and that front profile clearly is turned up as far as possible to help air get under the nose as much as possible too, which enhances the effect.

Was just going to say looking from the front, it kinda makes me think of older Indycars

F1 designers will have to learn a thing or two from the VW iDR pike's peak. It had skirts but the skirts were very tough, almost flexible so it could rumble over a few rocks every now and then.

So, this season onwards low rake is the better solution? But i read somewhere high rake can also work...any thoughts
