McLaren MCL36

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

There's defo differences on the car they had on stage. The floor tunnels appear to transition smoothly towards the edge of the floor. I wonder if they are using the full width of the floor for the tunnels some how? That could be a massive advantage if they've found a way to do that within the rules...

The rear suspension is multilink, not double wishbone.
Interesting.

are they using the frontsidepods curvature and lack of undercut to guide air to seal the sides of the floor?
Definitly they follow a more 21 design path then AM that tried a completely new concept for these new rules

Lack of undercat, lack of inovations, I had muck higher expectations. Basic car, 2021 design.
The lack of an undercut isn’t necessarily a bad thing, they are using that in order to drive airflow away from the floor… I would argue that is more innovative than using an undercut as usual.

The nose is really thin, a lot of work there to pass a crash with that.

It’s also a very early version of the car, with most of the key parts hidden until testing and with more parts coming to the first race.

Yeah that's what I was noticing as well but I couldn't tell if it just looked that way based on the outwash design of the side pods, we need a comparison.

Does lack of undercut / outwash design on side pods make the low pressure air under the floor work 'faster'? this isn't my area

Dude, they have literally invented a new rear suspension layout. And this is shown on a car which James Key admitted to being intentionally simplified to hide things.

The sidepods do look very straight from front on, but it's an illusion to how narrow the sidepods really are. Undercut at the front creating outwash tapers to a strong downwash at the back. Tonnes of floor space on show as a result. It looks good.

3 cars shown, and 3 different looks. All worries about design freedom certainly haven't came true!

I suspect this will be closer to the Mercedes than the Aston Martin to the Mercedes.

Based on nothing but a hunch.

actually scarbs just posted something similar, it seems frontsidepod curvature outwards mimicks bargeboards and is probably to help seal the floor

And we still have the big 3 to show what they came up with… I’m with you, most of my worries about the individuality of the teams are dissipating

If they can seal the edge of the floor, they might be using the entire width as a venturi tunnel... that could be game changing.

If this is the brake duct… That’s ridiculously small!

Interesting that there is no shots from the rear. Maybe they have found a loophole in that area

It most definitely isn’t.
