Red Bull RB18 Speculation Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I have seen basic bodywork over any old bit of hardware. It doesn't have to be a current tub to have apparently current clothes draped over it. I've seen all sorts of cobbled together stuff over the years - even an old tub with plywood additions with bodywork on it once. Some is very convincing and some doesn't stand up to any close scrutiny. But if it's just to sit in a sponsor's office foyer, it won't really make any different either way. It's the shiny paintwork that will make unknowing folk think "it's Max's F1 car!".
I stand corrected. You are right, it was probably plywood...
These days, it's probably a few layers of moulded carbonfibre with some stiffeners, but's certainly won't be a "tub" as we would think it.
'
Why use carbon fiber? Glass would work as well and be way cheaper.

Agreed, but the teams are set up to do CF work, and the cost comes out of the marketing budget and so is outside any cost caps. They're spending someone else's money anyway as it'll have come from sponsors.

For the top three teams, there is a huge amount of spare money lying around that they can't use on the racing cars. May as well spend it on marketing toys instead, especially if it keeps key workers busy.

Buried in here there’s a suggestion that RB may use the same rear pushrod layout as the Mclaren:

https://it.motorsport.com/f1/news/f1-mc ... o/8104939/
In the rear, however, there was an inversion of the schemes with the introduction of the push rod: in Woking they wanted to prevent the tie rod in the gearbox attachment from interfering with the Venturi channels and they moved the shock absorbers and springs up, freeing the area below to zoom in on the eye-catching Coca Cola area. From what we understand this is a concept that we will also find on the real Red Bull RB18.

We should state of course, other Cola bottle makes are available 😉

But seriously, how would he know that when RB are so secretive they won’t even release a simplified Render of the real RB18? Is he suggesting they’ve leaked the details to journos?

It's probably a good guess as the pull rod rear does need to avoid the diffuser etc., where a push rod sits everything out of the way.

Or possibly someone from the team tells a friend who tells a friend etc.

It’s all definitely to be taken with a pinch of salt but equally it was suspected for a while that Mclaren would have pullrod at the front (and Ferrari are expected to also do so) - one of those is true, let’s see about the other - and often these seemingly baseless rumours do tend to end up happening.

Who knows about the RB but this was the first time I’d heard that so interesting to speculate 🧐

I speculate that Red Bull's car will be similar to Aston Martin's, just more extreme :).

based on AT03, RB18 might use rear pullrod susp. & front pushrod susp. And perhaps similar cooling installations.

It was suspected because there was photographic evidence for this, it is pure speculation for other teams

Considering the noises that we are hearing about the lack of grip for slower corners (sim experience) from various teams and McLaren having issues last year on slow corner performance, maybe with the new regulations, they think it's the right solution and not just for some aero gains?

Honestly, screw RedBull for not even providing some simplified renders of their actual car.

Just wanted to have a look at what one of previous championship contenders had done with these rules. You know, to have a reference point.

Now we have to wait until pictures from Barcelona emerge

From your article:

Red Bull Racing is said to be secretly conducting a shakedown of the new RB18 for 2022 on Wednesday.
The team is said to be testing a temporary white painted car with drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
Max was in Monaco today, yesterday he/his plane :) was in Londen.
The whole day there was a Mercedes F1 Team Truck at the circuit. I don't think RBR will show them their car.
Also it was announced that there will be a shakedown tomorrow with the RB18.
