The texture of the plate under the sidepod intake appears very similar to the texture of the road from a distance.

Looking at the non finished panels of the side pods, with the ‘spicey “update remark, could Newey have some kind of blown diffuser variant in his bag ? As he was always experimenting with these items.

Either separate links or a classic anti-dive setup which uses angeled attachment points for the two wishbones.

More than anti-dive, this setup, if my mind doesn't fool me, will work diving more than a "neutral" setup. In other words: I see an "anti-anti-dive".

Yup it will work when the car is diving, that's when Newey's team want the effects they're after for sure.. Still it's certainly anti-dive if we think of kinetics. There is more compression of the spring for every inch of dive (pull rod) and the mounts also take any sideways component of the force. So the car dives less.

Kinematically, for aero reasons, maybe less nose movement, or maybe they want to tilt the wheel shrouds back a little or something or even the wishbone itself.. Just guessing of course.

Layman here, could the reason for the novel suspension geometry be to counter porpoising?

You mean strange because they differ in height? This is an anti-dive geometry. When breaking the car does not "dive". Ferrari also has an anti-dive front suspension, but less anti-dive.

In general, after seeing the Red Bull, i dare to say that Mercedes and Williams screwed up with their new cars. Most teams went for long sidepods. It seems to be more important to keep the front tyre wake away from the rear of the car and also feed the beam wing. Mercedes and Williams obviously have not noticed that, but i cannot imagine that all the other teams are wrong...another why i dare to say this is that F1s two most sucessfull minds - Adrian Newey and Rory Byrne both opted for long sidepods. I know Rory Byrne did not design the F1-75, he only is an adviser since 2007 and the F2004 the last car he was responsible for. But for the first time, even only as an adviser, he was actually involved in the design of a car again, not only making an existing design faster(what was his advisory role since 2007). And maybe its just me, but i think you can see Rory Byrnes Signature everywhere on the F1. Front Suspension, Front-Wing, Beamwing, Airbox and of course the sidepods, which obviously have a similar purpose like the ones he introduced on the B195 and F399 and were copied by McLaren in 2011....

I guess it was damaged when he went off track? but we saw no footage of him colliding with anything today. just Gravel.

Maybe, it's difficult to judge unless we get to know when the photo of the damage was taken.

I think the outer skin is so thin that the drag on the camera mounted there has caused it to break at the rear plate of where the camera is sitting on.

Im pretty sure the cooling outlets sit on a different panel that can be removed individually.
