As a Ferrari fan, this result is most welcome and a lot of relief! Yes, we had a couple of Poles last season surprisingly, but being a new set of rules, new cars and what have you, this is a very positive start. I was honestly expecting maybe 2nd & 3rd or 4th with Max a long way ahead, so to be on Pole and the clean side of the track in 3rd is great.

The race is the big one though... you can never rule out Max's pace and Perez might also come into play a bit being very good at looking after the tyres. In saying that, with Leclerc and Sainz being so closely matched for pace hopefully we'll be able to combat whatever strategy Red Bull have.

Even if we don't end up winning this one, as long as we can give Red Bull a hard time and stay close, it sets a solid baseline to work with for the season ahead... and seeing as Sainz looked a bit dejected from his qualifying performance, yet still being so close to Pole... there still might be more to come from the F1-75...

I'm sure Ferrari will take a good step forward with the updates for the 3rd (4th) race of the season, given that the F1-75 is pretty much the same car with minor patches here and there after participating in the Fiorano shakedown and testing in Barcelona about a month ago. Probably Binotto's plan is to fully understand the whole car, its strengths and weaknesses, on different tracks, in order to bring the most effective upgrades that will have an impact on the whole season. Given their updated simulation tools, this is a reasonable option.

I hope Leclerc and Sainz can win today if the racing pace is good and there are no mistakes from the pitwall strategy.

So the characteristic of this engine/car package is it accelerates really well but the top speed isn't up there, it's more like mid pack top speed, could that be a weakness in battle? I read in Mark Hughes' report that the Red Bull gained 5 more kmh than the Ferrari from the S/F line to the speed trap

It's interesting that they decided to tune the PU this way, after the hybrid upgrade last year the Ferrari would pull all the way to the end of the straight and was even getting praise from the opponents for this

While it's obvious that every car wants a lot of top speed, but in current Ferrari scenario, if the car quickly shoots into its top speed due to having better traction and earlier than the car behind and if the chasing car achieves it's top speed slightly later and even if slightly higher, it's not such a big issue.

Shorter gears on the Ferrari also seem to play a big part here.
I wonder how that will play out in the race.

All depends how they work with DRS too and the longer straights. If a faster RB is behind with DRS, then a 4-5km/h difference in speed will/should make for a easy overtake. Out of curiosity, what were the fastest speeds at the end of the S/F line without DRS assistance?
Mess with the Bull - you get the horns.

Ferrari had rely on the ERS far more last year to make up for the ICE side. Low speed acceleration was still behind the other PUs. That’s why they had to carry the ERS out so far.

Obviously you can tune deployment, so this a conscious choice for Bahrain.

There's literally ocean loads of evidence by now that short or long gearing makes no meaningful difference and hasn't since 2014, yet people still bring this up every time some cars have a bit shorter gearing than others. In 9 years of V6 turbo formula people still haven't realised this, on a forum called f1technical no less. Incredible really come to think of it :!:

Surely a shorter ratio box will accelerate much quicker than another one with longer ratios? (engine with the same power output)

As long as teams don't make catastrophic mistake in their calculations, no, it won't, because rules back in 2012-2013 were written intentionally in a such a way to eliminate this variable. Since then we've seen super long and super short gears over the years and not once did it make a difference. Teams obviously know this and this is why you have never ever heard anyone mention this in the paddock. It's entirely a non issue for everyone.

Leclerc looking solid.

Sainz pace still off a little bit. He’s holding Lewis off but for how long I don’t know. The Mercedes is quick on the back half of the track.

Absolutely flawlessly executed. Redbull touted as favourites throughout the weekend. We got ‘em in quali and we had them in the race on raw pace, and reliability. Long may this continue
