Something else got me thinking.
Sauber has made their own rear gearbox, but are the suspension components theirs or Ferraris? Hard to believe a Sauber suspension is more advanced than a Mercedes one? Just pondering how much weight must be put to suspension as the root cause.

In the SA Tech Talk episode on F1TV there was an interview with Jan Monchaux from Sauber and they said they don't use the Ferrari rear suspension.

The components is what I refer to. For example Sauber can have a different configuration of wishbones and rockers etc but the dampers other valves, bars and other mechanisms could be a Ferrari specification. Those little components could be the difference in porpoising or not.

Curious if anyone can confirm if these components are Ferrari related.

Why did they test two types of sidepod? Just to have something to compare against?

In Barcelona they ran an early revision of the w13 that was most likely finalized last year, maybe even before the season was over. What they ran in Bahrain was a later revision, most likely finished as late as possible.

I wonder if the underlying monocoque is the same or not. The big changes would be potentially be radiator placement, impact structures, fuel cell shape. The nosecone, halo, airbox, all that stuff seemed the same/interchangeable between the two versons. Maybe the Barcelona chassis was already in manufacture during 2020.

I'm not sure when the rules delay happened nor whether or not that was before or after they started building the next season's cars.

Mercedes have already confirmed the underlying hardware are the same/same placement as Barcelona. Just the outer bodywork is different…

Mercedes' engineer says:
“Don't look at the surface of the car and the rear wing flap. This is misleading. Air resistance mainly generates the skin blade of the rear wing and the lower wing in the rear, and there we are high up.”

Mercedes will bring a new rear wing to Australia because of their problems with drag.

Hope the upgrades work.. car should gain 3 to 4 tenths just by reducing the weight to the minium spec

A little presumptuous to claim to "lap the entire grid", but it looks like they are one race ahead of the initial plan. After Melbourne we should know if they were able to fully understand the problem.

Think the lap the grid is made as a joke. But I doubt it will give these dividends. Will it catch them up to the front two if they work, certainly. But both Ferrari and red bull won't be standing still with them both smelling championship glory.

His suggestion is Merc main thing they need to fix it the suspension first.
So he casts some doubt on it, at least whether it will address the main problem
