Ferrari F1-75

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Never take rain, let alone gravel, into account regarding exact aerodynamics of a car. Water spray from rain goes all over the place and only sometimes helps with vortex visualization, only flow viz applied directly to car surface and itself being a special mixture of paraffin and pigment can show the flow on the car, but not around it. With gravel, gravitational and inertial forces are way bigger for a piece of stone than aerodynamic forces.
It makes sense, water and gravel inertia is much higher. However if you look at the dust you can see how it is directed into the channel between the wheel and the body.

I expect this to be a feature other cars to develop. In fact, if it's a car without a McLaren style edge wing, they might have their own version of the ice skate down there already.

f.e. Ferrari ran their own version of the under floor wing (RB ice skate) in testing.

Don't you think the gravel which follows the leading edge of the floor, can give an indication of the direction of the air and the outwash thats probably created and probably gets supported by the sidepod? That was my thought was.
Gravel is heavy, you can't use gravel to trace air flow.

May seems a little early to play their ERS update card, luckily it's Mr Nugnes and his reliability is RBPT level

First two points go against all we’ve heard until now:

- No (significant) updates in Imola as per Binotto because it’s a sprint race weekend

- They’ll develop the hybrid part for as long as possible (this would make much more sense than bringing it already several months before deadline, right?)

Is there a limit to how many revisions of non-homologated engine parts you are allowed? Because I would 100% bring an intermediate step to races, to check how it's doing, before the final spec in September.

Yes, we had 4 comments explaining this already...

-If by "new floor" they mean the tweaked floor they tested but didn't race in Australia, it's still possible. They've already done their testing and if they found it works they can bring it to Imola without having to worry about wasting the limited sprint weekend practice time on validation work.
-They already brought early 2022 hybrid update forward to late 2021. It wouldn't be unlike them to bring forward hybrid updates yet again.
Maybe the can do the rollout of the final homologated hybrid system in phases

Thank you very much for sharing this article. Its really good to see that credit is given. But i have some corrections to make, as some things are not fully correct :

1. Rory already had signed a new contract a while ago. His old contract ended on Dec. 31st

2. Rory is not an adviser SINCE 2020. Rory never left Ferrari. But he never was involved in the design of a new car since the F2007. The last car he was fully responsible for was the F2004. In 2005 he became Design Director in an overviewing position only, getting more involved in the design of the F248 and F2007 after the desastrous 2005 season. The F2007 was the last time Rory was involved in the design itself and he retired at the end of 2006. But he still was constantly under contact untill today. From 2007-2020, his job was projects to make the existing design faster. In 2020 Ferrari asked Rory, who only worked 3-5 months every year, to take on a leading role again. He helped with the 2021 car, and had a leading role in the design of the F1-75.

Ferrari would have been stupid not to do this as Rory is probably the most experienced engineer left in F1 when it comes to cars like this. He is the only engineer left in F1 who was Chief Designer in the era of the first ground effect cars.

They tested a new diffuser, not a new floor.

I don't know where this misinformation has started from but it's not true.
