Mercedes W14 Speculation Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

In football (uk), this would be Lewis’ testimonial year and he would be expected to free-transfer to a lower league team!

What better place than Williams, which would be of great help to his buddy James!

Correct. Monocoque + engine + gearbox + the three screws to hold them together.
So, far less than what some teams claim (over 80.000 parts)

In this video, they claim that W14 will have a thicker floor (in order to reduce porpoising), which adds weight, so the car is now narrower/shorter, which in turn gives additional benefits (lower the weight, change the weight distribution and improve the car's low corner driveability...).

In addition, the new car has a modified transmission, which is accompanied by a new rear suspension. Then the rear of the car is less tapered for 2 reasons: 1. the flat section of the rear suspension is forming a T-shape to increase the diffuser's efficiency, thus taking more advantage of the beam wing effect. The second reason is to have less of the floor exposed to the above forces, which causes flexing around the edges...

They also say that HPP has also improved engine combustion with the help of the new Petronas fuel. This is in line with the rumours regarding this allowance for reliability reasons:

The thicker floor is a bit of low hanging fruit as far as guesses go, given the revised 2023 technical regulations mandate stiffer diffuser edges and the Mercedes diffuser edge was flappier than the average bird's wing.

So is the revised rear suspension and transmission. The shorter wheelbase I simply don't see, given it really only served Alfa Romeo well insofar it made their car lighter. It's not the Mercedes way and only one team really leaned towards it last year, and suffered in higher speed stuff as a consequence.

The fuel thing is a totally unsourced rumour started by Gazzetta. The reliability exceptions are rather strict and require proof of a reliability issue, among other things. I don't remember Mercedes having fuel related reliability issues last year, but who knows.

Will this car have push rod rear and pull rod front suspension?
That's important. There must be a reason for rb to do this.
For Sure!!

Are you guys thinking Mercedes can catch up this year ? I don’t see them getting out of 3rd place with 1 year late on development, they could even endup 4th place

If the car is right in the first 3 races, yes I see them in the mix. If they are still not where they thought, they are not going to catch up this year either.
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.
